Konu Anlatımı
Family Members and Daily Routines — Aile ve Günlük Rutin
Aile bireyleri akrabalık dereceleriyle adlandırılır: aunt (teyze/hala), uncle (dayı/amca), cousin (kuzen), grandparents (büyük anne-baba) ve step-sibling (üvey kardeş). Günlük rutin ise bir günün tekrar eden işleridir: get up, have breakfast, get dressed, do homework, go to bed. Zaman ifadeleri bu cümlelerin vazgeçilmez parçasıdır: at seven o'clock (saat), in the morning (ay/gün), on Mondays (gün). Örnek: My mother gets up at six and my father commutes to work at seven.
Routines Today and in the Past — Bugünün ve Geçmişin Karşılaştırılması
Bugün tekrar eden alışkanlıklar geniş zamanla anlatılır; geçmişte olup artık sürmeyen alışkanlıklar ise used to ile ifade edilir. My grandfather used to walk to school, but now I take the bus. cümlesi, iki dönemin karşılaştırmasını yapar. Bu tür cümlelerde 'use to' değil 'used to' yazılır; olumsuz ve soru biçiminde 'didn't use to' kullanılır.
Hobbies and Interests — Hobi ve İlgi Alanları
Hobileri anlatırken be keen on, be into, enjoy + -ing ve spend time on kalıpları kullanılır. My sister is keen on cycling. ve I spend most of my free time on photography. cümleleri bu yapıları gösterir. Aile üyeleri de farklı hobiler paylaşır: bahçe işleri (gardening), film izleme, spor ve okuma. Hobiler yalnız boş zaman değerlendirmekle kalmaz; aile üyelerinin birlikte vakit geçirmesini de sağlar.
Types of Houses and Families — Ev ve Aile Tipleri
Günlük rutin, bir günün tekrar eden işleridir: get up (uyanmak), have breakfast (kahvaltı yapmak), get dressed (giyinmek), do homework (ev ödevi yapmak) ve go to bed (uyuymak). Zaman ifadeleri, bu rutinlerin doğru anlatılmasında kritik öneme sahiptir: at seven o'clock (saat 7'de), in the morning (morning), on Mondays (Pazartesi).
In this lesson you will learn to talk about your family in English. You will study the words for family members — mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, nephew, niece, grandparents, parents-in-law — and the difference between English words that Turkish separates: uncle covers both dayı and amca, aunt covers both hala and teyze, and cousin covers both erkek and kız kuzen.
You will learn the vocabulary of daily routine (get up, have breakfast, get dressed, do homework, help with the house, go to bed) and the time expressions that go with it: at seven o'clock, in the morning, on Mondays, at weekends.
You will also learn how to say what people like doing: be keen on, be into, enjoy + -ing, spend time on, and the words for homes and family types: flat, detached house, terraced house, farmhouse, houseboat, nuclear family, extended family, single-parent family.
Ön Bilgi
You need three things before the lesson.
First, the present simple with the -s in the third person singular. Routines are all habitual, so My mother gets up at six is right and My mother get up is wrong.
Second, the prepositions of time. This topic is full of them: at with clock times, in with parts of the day, months and years, on with days, and at with weekends in British English.
Third, the -ing form after certain expressions: enjoy reading, be keen on cycling, spend time on gardening. Since the lesson covers hobbies, you will use these constantly, and putting the base form instead of the -ing form is the most common error.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short family description.
There are five people in my family: my parents, my two sisters and me. My mother gets up at six and prepares breakfast. My father leaves for work at half past seven. My elder sister is keen on painting, and the younger one spends most of her free time on the piano. At weekends we usually visit my grandparents, who live in a small detached house outside the city.
The paragraph introduces the family, gives two routines, names two hobbies and finishes with a weekend habit. Those four moves are enough for any family-writing task.
Now write five sentences about your family using the same four moves.
İleri Örnek
Compare a present-day description with a comparison to the past.
Present: My grandmother lives in a flat in the city centre and she watches a series every evening.
Comparison: My grandmother used to live in a village, and she used to get up before sunrise to help in the fields. Nowadays she lives in a flat in the city centre and she watches a series every evening.
The second version shows change by putting used to and nowadays side by side. In writing tasks about family life, the comparison almost always scores higher than a simple description, because it shows that you can use two tenses correctly.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Follow these steps to write about your family.
- Step 1 — Introduce the family. There are four people in my family. Or name the members: my parents, my brother and me.
- Step 2 — Give one routine for one member, with the correct -s. My father cooks dinner on Fridays.
- Step 3 — Give one hobby with the right pattern. My brother is into photography. / My sister enjoys reading.
- Step 4 — Describe your home. We live in a terraced house near the park.
- Step 5 — Add one comparison. My mother used to live in a farmhouse, but now we live in a flat. Or keep the whole text in the present if the task asks only about today.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Six mistakes are common in this topic.
- Forgetting the -s in the third person. My mother get up at six should be gets up. Every routine sentence with he, she, it or a family member's name needs -s.
- Using the wrong time preposition. In seven o'clock should be at seven o'clock; on the morning should be in the morning; in Mondays should be on Mondays.
- Writing I enjoy to read. After enjoy the verb takes the -ing form: I enjoy reading.
- Confusing used to and be used to. A past habit is used to go; being accustomed to something is be used to going.
- Saying my family is five. Count the members with There are five people in my family.
- Confusing house and home. A house is the building; home is the place where you belong and feel comfortable. Both are possible in many sentences, but they are not always interchangeable.
