Technology in the Future and Everyday Life
Technology means the practical use of scientific knowledge. Every day we use technology without noticing it: a phone that wakes us up, a bus that takes us to school, a refrigerator that keeps food cold. In this topic we look at the technology that is changing everyday life right now and the technology that may change it in the future.
Robots and Artificial Intelligence
A robot is a programmable machine that carries out physical tasks. Robots are already used in car factories, in hospitals and in dangerous places such as mines. Artificial intelligence means computer systems that can do tasks which normally need human intelligence, for example recognising an image, translating a sentence or predicting the next word. The difference is simple: a robot moves, and artificial intelligence learns and decides.
Many people worry that machines will take every job. In the same way, robots may do the most dangerous and repetitive work, while people do the work that needs imagination, care and judgement. That is why schools still teach languages, science and art: these are the areas where machines help us instead of replacing us.
Smart Homes and Everyday Devices
A smart home is a home whose devices are connected so that a person can control them from a phone. A smart light can switch on when you arrive, a smart thermostat can lower the temperature when nobody is home, and a smart lock can show who comes in. These devices save time and energy, but they also collect information about us, and this is why personal data must be protected with strong passwords.
- A smart thermostat saves energy by lowering the temperature when nobody is at home.
- A smartwatch can count your steps, but constant notifications may also distract you.
- Online shopping is fast, but it leaves personal data on many different websites.
Clean Energy and Green Technology
Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas are limited, and burning them harms the air. Renewable energy comes from sources that nature replaces, such as wind, water and sunlight. A solar panel turns sunlight into electricity, and an electric vehicle stores energy in a battery instead of burning petrol. Electric cars produce less noise and no exhaust while they are moving, so they are a big help in crowded cities.
| Technology | Benefit | Possible problem |
|---|
| Solar panels | Electricity without smoke | They need sunlight and free space |
| Electric vehicles | Less noise and no exhaust | They need good charging points |
| Smart thermostats | They save energy and money | They collect data about the home |
| Drones for delivery | Fast delivery in difficult places | They may disturb privacy and birds |
How We Talk About the Future
To make a general prediction, use will plus the base form: 'People will use less paper in ten years.' To talk about a plan you have already decided on, or about a prediction based on present evidence, use be going to: 'We are going to recycle our bottles.' For a fixed arrangement, use the present continuous: 'I am visiting my cousins on Saturday.' For an uncertain possibility, use might, may or could: 'Robots might do dangerous jobs.'
To talk about a real result, use the first conditional. The condition comes first and uses the present simple, and the result uses will plus the base form: 'If we cycle to school more often, the air in our city will be cleaner.' Remember that we use less with uncountable nouns and fewer with countable nouns.
Sample Question and Solution
Question: Which sentence is grammatically correct?
Solution: The sentence with 'If we use public transport more' and 'will be less crowded' is the correct one, because the condition is in the present simple and the result uses will plus the base form. A sentence that puts will inside the if-clause is wrong.
Second question: Which sentence expresses a plan that has already been made? The correct answer is the one with 'We are visiting the science museum on Saturday', because a fixed future arrangement is expressed with the present continuous.
Summary
Robots, artificial intelligence, smart devices and clean energy are changing our daily lives. We use will for predictions, be going to for plans, the present continuous for fixed arrangements, and might or could for possibilities. The first conditional joins a present simple condition to a will result. In our writing we should also use less and fewer correctly, protect personal data, and give balanced opinions about new technology.
Common Mistakes
- Writing 'will to travel' or 'might to help'; a modal verb is followed by the base form.
- Using will inside the if-clause; a real condition needs the present simple.
- Confusing fewer and less with countable and uncountable nouns.
- Writing a future plan with the present perfect; use the present continuous or be going to.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
How robots, artificial intelligence and clean energy will change our daily lives, and how to use today's devices safely and responsibly. Bu konuda ögrenme çıktıları:
- Name the technologies that are changing everyday life, such as robots, smart homes and clean energy.
- Talk about the future with will, be going to and the present continuous.
- Express possibility with might, may and could, and use the first conditional for results.
- Compare today's devices with future ones and give reasons for your answers.
- Explain how technology can help the environment, for example with solar panels and electric vehicles.
- Discuss online safety, passwords and personal data in clear and simple sentences.
- Read a short text about future technology and identify the main idea, the reference words and the writer's opinion.
Ön Bilgi
Bu konuya başlamadan önce temel kavram ve ön koşulları kavramanız yardımcı olacaktır. Konunun çerçevesinde şu kavramlar dikkat ister:
- 'Will' is used for predictions, opinions, promises and sudden decisions that are made while speaking.
- 'Be going to' is used for a plan you have already decided on, or for a prediction based on evidence in the present.
- The present continuous is used for a fixed future arrangement, especially with a time expression such as 'next week'.
- 'Might', 'may' and 'could' describe a possibility in the future, and all of them are followed by the base form of the verb.
- In the first conditional the if-clause uses the present simple and the result clause uses will plus the base form.
- Use less with uncountable nouns and fewer with countable nouns: less noise, fewer cars on the road.
- Personal data is any information that identifies a person, so strong passwords and careful sharing always matter.
- Renewable sources such as wind, water and sunlight are naturally replaced, unlike coal, oil and natural gas.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Günlük yaşamda ve mesleki bağlamda bir uygulama:
Soru: Complete the sentence: I bought the tickets yesterday. We ___ visit our cousins at the weekend.
- Step 1: Decide whether you have already made a plan.
- Step 2: You bought the tickets, so the arrangement was fixed before this moment.
- Step 3: For a plan or an arrangement that is already decided, use the present continuous or be going to.
- Step 4: Write the sentence: 'We are going to visit our cousins at the weekend.'
Sonuç/cevap: The correct form is 'are going to visit', because the plan was decided before now.
İleri Örnek
Daha ileri bir uygulama:
Soru: You must write a short article about clean energy for the school magazine.
- Step 1: Open with the problem: our cities still use a lot of energy from coal and gas.
- Step 2: Explain the cause with because or as a result of, and give one clear example.
- Step 3: Give two suggestions with should, such as putting solar panels on school roofs.
- Step 4: Finish with a first conditional sentence about the result and a short call to action.
Sonuç/cevap: A good article presents the problem, the causes, the suggestions and a realistic result.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Adding 'to' after will, might or could. We say 'People will travel more' and 'Robots might replace us at work', because a modal verb is always followed by the base form of the main verb.
Using will inside the if-clause of a real condition. The condition must be in the present simple: the version with the present simple is correct, while the one with will is not.
Confusing fewer and less. Say 'less noise' because noise cannot be counted, and 'fewer cars' because cars are countable nouns in the plural.
Using the present perfect for a future plan. A future arrangement needs the present continuous or be going to; a sentence with the present perfect and next week is wrong.
Forgetting the -s with a singular subject. Write 'A robot is helpful' and 'Robots are helpful', because the verb must agree with its subject in every time.
Overusing a very strong modal. A sentence that says people definitely will ride flying cars is too certain for the future; might or may expresses the idea far more accurately.
