Konu Anlatımı
What Is an Endangered Species?
A species is a group of living things that share the same features, such as the loggerhead sea turtle or the mountain gorilla. A species becomes endangered when its population has fallen so low that it may disappear forever unless people protect it. When no living member of the species is left anywhere in the world, the species is called extinct. The difference between these two words appears very often in the questions of this unit.
The place where a plant or an animal lives and grows is called its habitat. A wetland, a mountain forest, a coral reef, a desert and the open sea are all habitats. A species cannot live in the wrong habitat, because the habitat provides its food, its water and its shelter. This is why the protection of a habitat is more important than the protection of a single animal.
Main Threats to Wildlife
Scientists list four main dangers for wild animals and plants. The first one is habitat loss. Forests are cut down for roads, houses and farms, and lakes are drained for irrigation. When a habitat disappears, every species that lived in it disappears with it. The second danger is pollution: plastic bags, chemical waste and factory smoke poison the air, the water and the soil.
The third danger is poaching, which means killing or catching wild animals illegally, usually to sell horns, skins or other parts. Poaching reduces the number of animals so quickly that some species can no longer reproduce. The fourth danger is climate change, which raises the temperature of the water, melts the ice where polar animals live and destroys the coral reefs that feed millions of fish.
- Habitat loss: forests are cut down and wetlands are drained.
- Pollution: plastic, chemicals and smoke enter the air, the water and the soil.
- Poaching: wild animals are killed illegally for profit.
- Climate change: temperatures rise and habitats become unsuitable.
Habitats in Türkiye and Around the World
Türkiye is one of the most important regions in the world for sea turtles. Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) have been coming back to the same beaches for millions of years, and they lay their eggs in warm, open sand just above the water line. Artificial lights, beach houses, plastic waste and people walking on the sand all reduce the number of successful nests. In central Anatolia, the Anatolian leopard, which once lived in the forests and mountains of the region, is now extremely rare.
Culture and nature need the same care. Places such as the rock sites of Cappadocia (Göreme), Safranbolu, Çatalhöyük, Harran, Mardin, the historic areas of Istanbul with Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace, and the ancient city of Ephesus show how much history Türkiye has to protect. These sites are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and they need careful care just like a wetland or a forest.
Conservation: What Can We Do?
Conservation means protecting nature and using natural resources carefully so that they are still available for future generations. Conservation needs three different groups of people. Governments create national parks, nature reserves and strict laws against poaching. Scientists count animals, study their habitats and find out why a population is falling. Local people and students report illegal activity, clean rivers and beaches, and change their own daily habits.
There are many small things that students can do every day. Recycling paper and glass reduces the number of trees that must be cut down. Using a bicycle or public transport instead of a private car reduces air pollution. Taking a shorter shower and switching off the lights save energy, and energy is often produced by burning fuel. Carrying a cloth bag to the market keeps plastic out of rivers, and joining a clean-up campaign on a beach protects turtle nests before the season begins.
| Threat | What it causes | A practical solution |
|---|
| Habitat loss | Animals lose their homes | Create and protect nature reserves |
| Pollution | Water and soil become unhealthy | Recycle and reduce plastic use |
| Poaching | Populations fall too quickly | Apply strict laws and strong penalties |
| Climate change | Habitats become too warm or too dry | Save energy and use clean energy |
Useful Language for Suggestions and Necessity
When you give advice, use should or must followed by the base form of the verb: 'We should protect the nests', 'We must not disturb the animals'. Use mustn't for things that are forbidden and don't have to when something is not necessary. To talk about danger, use 'be threatened by' or 'at risk of' plus the -ing form. The verb 'endanger' is followed directly by its object: 'Plastic endangers the turtles'.
Sample Question and Solution
Question: Volunteers have cleaned the beach since March. Which sentence is grammatically correct?
Solution: The sentence with 'since March' and the past participle 'cleaned' is the correct one. March is a starting point, so we use 'since', and 'since' and 'for' can never be used together in the same phrase.
Second question: Which animal is endangered, the dodo or the sea turtle? The correct answer is the sea turtle, because living turtles still exist while the dodo has completely died out. The two words are often mixed up in the questions of this unit, so always check the meaning first.
Summary
An endangered species is still alive but in serious danger, whereas an extinct species has died out completely. The main threats are habitat loss, pollution, poaching and climate change, and the habitat is the key point because it gives food, water and shelter to the whole community. Conservation needs laws, scientists and ordinary people working together. In your writing, always present the problem, its causes and practical solutions.
Common Mistakes
- Writing 'We should to save water'; after should we use the base form of the verb.
- Using the present perfect with a finished time such as 'last year'; choose the past simple instead.
- Confusing 'endangered' and 'extinct'; check whether living members still exist.
- Forgetting the -ing form after the phrase 'at risk of'.

- 'Endangered' describes a species whose population has become so small that it may disappear unless people protect it.
- 'Extinct' is the final stage: a species is extinct when no living member of it remains anywhere in the world.
- Habitat loss is one of the biggest dangers for wildlife, because a species cannot live outside the place that gives it food, water and shelter.
- Poaching is illegal hunting. It harms not only the animals that are killed but also the whole food chain around them.
- Plastic waste in the sea is swallowed by turtles and other animals, and it blocks their digestive system.
- Every person can help: recycling, saving water and energy, and refusing wild animal products all make a real difference.
- National parks and wildlife reserves protect a whole area, including the plants, the water and the food that animals need.
- When you write about conservation, always present three parts: the problem, its causes and a practical solution.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Günlük yaşamda ve mesleki bağlamda bir uygulama:
Soru: Complete the sentence: Plastic waste ___ the sea turtles of the Mediterranean coast.
- Step 1: Decide what the sentence needs, and here it needs a verb that shows danger to somebody.
- Step 2: The verb 'endanger' means to put a person, an animal or a place in danger.
- Step 3: This verb is used directly with its object, so we do not add 'to' or 'with' before the animal name.
- Step 4: Write the whole sentence with the subject in the third person singular: 'Plastic waste endangers the sea turtles.'
Sonuç/cevap: The correct verb is 'endangers'. The full sentence is 'Plastic waste endangers the sea turtles.'

Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Using 'to' after should. Many students write 'We should to protect the turtles'; the correct form has no 'to', because should is followed by the base form of the verb.
Confusing endangered and extinct. An endangered species is still alive, whereas an extinct species has died out completely, so the two words must never be used for the same animal.
Using a past time with the present perfect. You cannot say 'I have seen it last week'; with a finished time such as last week you must use the past simple.
Forgetting the -ing form after 'at risk of'. This phrase is always followed by the -ing form, so we write 'at risk of disappearing' and never 'at risk of to disappear'.
Writing habitat in the plural by mistake. The plural noun needs a plural verb, as in 'These habitats are protected', while a single habitat takes 'is'.
Choosing a weak modal verb for a duty. 'We must stop the illegal hunting' shows strong obligation; 'we might' and 'we could' only suggest a possibility, so they are too weak here.
Özet
An endangered species is one whose population has fallen so low that it may disappear; an extinct species has already died out. The main dangers are habitat loss, pollution, poaching and climate change. Because every species depends on its habitat for food, water and shelter, protecting whole areas protects many species at once. Students help every day by recycling, saving water and joining clean-up campaigns.
