What Will We Learn in This Lesson?

In this lesson you will learn the following:

• Name the character traits of a person in English.
• Use 'is' to say that a person is kind, brave or funny.

What is this topic about?

Our character is the way we think, feel and act. In this topic we learn the words that describe a person's character. Words like kind, brave, funny and honest tell us what a person is like inside.

Character is not the same as height or colour. If a friend never gives up, we say 'She is brave'. If a friend always tells the truth, we say 'He is honest'.

How do we build a sentence?

We put the character word after is. We say 'He is kind.' and 'My teacher is patient.' We never say 'He kind.'

For one person we use is, for more than one person we use are. We say 'They are happy.' and 'You are quiet.'

Useful words and rules

• Very and quite come before the character word: very funny, quite polite.
• The negative form is 'is not' or the short form 'isn't'.
• One syllable words do not take 'a' before them: He is happy.
• 'Kind to someone' means that we are good to that person: She is kind to her classmates.
• Happy and sad are easy to show with our face: we smile or we frown.

Say each word twice. Then cover the words and say them again from memory.

Example

Read about Selin: 'Selin is nine years old. She is quiet in the classroom but she is funny with her friends. She is helpful; she always cleans the board.'

1. Find the first character word: 'She is quiet'.

3. Find the third one: 'She is helpful'.

A Simple Example

Let us start with a simple example.

Example 1: Saying a good quality

Write one sentence about your best friend. Use a character word.

1. Choose a character word: kind, funny or brave.
2. Put the word after 'is': 'My best friend is kind.'
3. Add a name if you want: 'My best friend Deniz is brave.'

Answer: My best friend Deniz is brave.

A Harder Example

Read the three sentences and choose a character word for each one.

1. She always helps her mother. She is helpful.

Make the sentences stronger with the words 'very' and 'quite'.

1. Take the first sentence: She is happy. Now say: She is very happy.

3. Read both sentences and see that the word order does not change.

Answer: She is very happy. He is quite polite.
