What is this topic about?

Weather conditions tell us about the sun, the clouds, the rain, the wind and the temperature. In this topic we learn to say what the weather is like with the words sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy and snowy.

We always use the word it for the weather. We say 'It is sunny today.' and we never say 'He is sunny today.'

How do we talk about the weather?

We begin with 'It is'. After it we put the weather word: 'It is rainy.' We can also say 'The weather is nice.' or 'The weather is bad.'

For the temperature we use the numbers and the word degrees: 'It is 20 degrees.' 'It is five degrees.' 'It is minus two degrees.'

Useful words and rules

• Sunny means there is a bright sun: It is sunny today.
• Rainy and snowy take a verb: It is raining, it is snowing.
• Cloudy, windy and stormy end with the letter y: It is cloudy and windy.
• For the feeling of the air we use hot, warm, cool and cold.
• To ask, we say 'What is the weather like?' and the answer is a short sentence.

Read the list twice. First say the word, then say the example sentence with the weather word in it.

Read each row aloud. Then close the table and say one sentence about today's weather.

Example

Look at a weather picture: the sky has grey clouds, small drops of rain are falling and the wind is moving the trees. Write three sentences about it.

1. Say the sky first: It is cloudy.
2. Say the rain: It is raining.
3. Say the temperature: It is 12 degrees.

Now add a sentence about your clothes: I am wearing a raincoat today.

A Simple Example

Let us start with a simple example.

Example 1: Saying today's weather

Write two sentences about today's weather in your town.

1. Look out of the window and look at the sky.
2. Say if the sun is out: It is sunny.
3. Add the temperature with degrees: It is 20 degrees.

Answer: It is sunny. It is 20 degrees.

Example 5: Choosing the clothes

Choose the right clothes for a snowy day and write the sentence.

1. Think about the weather: It is cold and snowy.
2. Choose a coat, a hat, gloves and a scarf.
