Konu Anlatımı

Continents and Countries

Dünya beş kıtaya ayrılır: Europe, Asia, Africa, America ve Oceania. Kıtalar ve ülkeler büyük harfle yazılır. Bir ülkenin konumu için in edatı kullanılır: Brazil is in South America. Karşılaştırma için ise comparatives yapıları devreye girer: Asia is bigger than Europe.

Ülkeler arasındaki farklar yalnızca büyüklük değildir; iklim, nüfus ve kültür de farklıdır. Bu farkları anlatırken more ve less kalıpları kullanılır: Canada is colder than Turkey. Karşılaştırma cümlesinde than bağlaçı her zaman bulunur.

Nationalities

Ülke adından vatandaşlık sıfatı türetilir: Brazil → Brazilian, Canada → Canadian, Japan → Japanese, Germany → German. country sözcüğü ülkeyi, nationality ise vatandaşlığı belirtir ve bu sıfatlar çoğunlukla -an, -ian, -ese ve -ish ekleriyle oluşur: America → American, Britain → British, China → Chinese.

Vatandaşlık sıfatları büyük harfle yazılır ve isimden önce gelir: a Brazilian student, a Japanese car. Hangi kıtadan olunduğunu sormak için Which continent is... from? kalıbı kullanılır: She is from Asia and she is Asian. Country ile nationality sorularında şıkların büyük harfle yazılması, ayrımın en hızlı kontrol yoludur.

Planets and the Solar System

Güneş sistemi sekiz gezegenden oluşur: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus ve Neptune. Gezegenler Güneş çevresinde döner ve her birinin kendine özgü özelliği vardır. Earth kendi ışığını üretmez, yaşam için gerekli koşullara sahip tek gezegendir.

Gezegenlerin büyüklüğü ve uzaklığı hakkında bilgi verilirken than ve the superlative kullanılır: Jupiter is the biggest planet. En büyük, en küçük gibi ifadelerde -est eki ya da most kullanımı devreye girer ve the ile birlikte yazılır.

Space Exploration

Uzay araştırmaları geçmişte başladı ve gelecekte sürecek. will ve be going to kalıpları gelecek zamanı anlatır: Scientists will send a new probe to Mars. Astronomlar yeni teleskoplar kuracak, insanlar ise Ay'a yeniden gidecek.

Uzay programlarının amacı bilgi toplamak, iklimi izlemek ve teknolojiyi geliştirmektir. Uydular haberleşme ve hava tahmini için kullanılır. Bu konudaki sözcükler probe, satellite, telescope, gravity ve orbit olarak sıralanabilir ve cümleler içinde birlikte öğrenilir.

Life in the Universe

Evrende yaşamın olup olmadığı hâlâ araştırılan bir sorudur. Bilim insanları yaşam için üç temel koşul arar: sıvı su, uygun sıcaklık ve koruyucu bir atmosfer. Bu yüzden Mars’ta su izi, Europa’nın buz kabuğu altında ise sıvı su aranır: Scientists are looking for signs of water on Mars.

Olasılık anlatımında may ve might kullanılır: There might be life under the ice. Uzay araştırmasıyla ilgili sözcükler life, conditions, discover ve signal biçiminde sıralanır; keşif cümlelerinde geniş zaman ile will sıkça birlikte görülür: Astronomers will discover new planets.

Comparing Continents and Planets

Kıtalar ile gezegenleri karşılaştırırken aynı dilbilgisi kuralları geçerlidir. Büyüklük için superlative, iki varlık için comparative kullanılır: Africa is bigger than Europe ve Jupiter is the biggest planet.

Africa is bigger than Europe gibi ifadelerle kıtaların büyüklüğü karşılaştırılır.

This lesson moves from the map of the world to the map of the sky. First you will learn the names of the continents and the adjectives that describe the people and cultures of each one, together with the pattern nationality adjective + noun such as a Brazilian student or Japanese technology.

Then you will study the vocabulary of the solar system: planet, orbit, gravity, atmosphere, satellite, probe, telescope, spacecraft, galaxy and the universe. You will learn which of these words are countable and which are not, because that decides whether they take an -s in the plural.

Finally you will practise comparing and predicting: comparatives and superlatives for size and distance (Jupiter is the largest planet), and will with be going to for space plans (Scientists will launch a new telescope next year).

Ön Bilgi

Three things must be in place before you begin.

First, capital letters with place names. Continents, countries, planets and languages all begin with a capital letter: Africa, Brazil, Mars, English. Adjectives of nationality are capitalised too: European food, Asian cities.

Second, prepositions of place: in for countries and continents (Kenya is in Africa), on for surfaces (The astronauts landed on the Moon).

Third, comparatives and superlatives. You will need -er for short adjectives (bigger), more for long ones (more distant) and the most for the top of the group. A short check: can you say which planet is the hottest and which is the coldest? That is exactly the structure this lesson uses.

Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam

Look at the simple descriptions below. Each one answers one question about geography or space.

Egypt is in Africa and the official language there is Arabic. Most of the continent lies in warm climates, so Africa is hotter than Europe. In the sky, Mars is called the red planet because of the iron oxide on its surface. It is smaller than Earth and it has two small moons.

The paragraph mixes three moves: locating a place, comparing two places, and explaining a name. Try the same with your own examples: Turkey is in... · Jupiter is bigger than... · Saturn is called... because...

İleri Örnek

Now read a longer text that combines geography with space science, the way a school magazine article would.

Space agencies have sent probes to every planet in the solar system. Mars attracts most of the attention because water ice lies beneath its surface, and a mission to Mars is going to answer basic questions about life. Meanwhile, the James Webb Space Telescope will observe galaxies that formed shortly after the beginning of the universe. Astronomers believe that many of those galaxies are further away than anything we have seen before.

Notice the tense mixture: have sent for completed work, is going to answer for a plan that is already in preparation, and will observe for a confident prediction. In your own writing, keep that mixture: past achievements, planned work, future results.

Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek

Follow these steps to build a correct comparison sentence about planets.

  1. Step 1 — Choose the two things. Name them with capital letters: Mercury, Earth.
  2. Step 2 — Choose the adjective. Size uses big, small; distance uses near, far; temperature uses hot, cold, warm.
  3. Step 3 — Add the comparative and than. Mercury is smaller than Earth. Remember than, not that or then.
  4. Step 4 — For three or more, use the superlative with the. Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system.
  5. Step 5 — Add a reason with because. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun because it orbits at about fifty-eight million kilometres.

Check: if your sentence has two things, use -er / more; if it has a group, use the -est / the most.

Karşılaştırma Tablosu

Space nouns are often confused with each other. This table separates the main ones.

WordCountable?MeaningExample
planetyeslarge body orbiting a starThere are eight planets in our system.
moonyesnatural satellite of a planetMars has two moons.
satelliteyesmachine put into orbitThe satellite sends weather data.
probeyesunmanned craft sent to studyA probe landed on the comet.
telescopeyesinstrument for seeing distant objectsThe telescope shows distant galaxies.
spacenothe area beyond the atmosphereSpace is extremely cold.
gravitynoforce that pulls objects togetherGravity keeps the planets in orbit.
researchnosystematic studySpace research costs a lot of money.

Careful: space, gravity and research never take an -s. Write space research, not spaces research.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar

Five errors are typical of this topic.

Özet

The lesson links geography to astronomy through the same grammar.

Kendini Dene

Answer in full sentences and then check the key.

  1. Complete: Jupiter is ____ (big) planet in the solar system.
  2. Which word is uncountable: planet, probe, gravity, telescope?
  3. Choose the correct sentence: (a) Mars has two moons. (b) Mars has two moones. (c) Mars has two moon.
  4. Fill in the preposition: Water ice lies ____ the surface of Mars. (on / in / at / under)
  5. Rewrite correctly: The telescope will observes distant galaxies.
  6. Write one sentence about a country and one about a planet. Use a comparative in each.

Answer key: 1) the biggest — a group comparison needs the plus the superlative. 2) gravity — it is a force, so it has no plural. 3) (a) — moon takes a regular plural. 4) on — things sit on a surface, so the phrase is on the surface of Mars. 5) The telescope will observe distant galaxies. — after will the verb stays in the base form. 6) Any correct pair, e.g. Turkey is smaller than Russia. Neptune is colder than Earth.
