Konu Anlatımı
23 April tarihinde National Sovereignty and Children's Day (Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı) kutlanır; bu tarih, Büyük Millet Meclisi'nin açıldığı gündür. 19 May tarihinde Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day (Atatürk'ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı) kutlanır. 30 August tarihinde Victory Day (Zafer Bayramı) anılır ve okullarda spor etkinlikleri düzenlenir. 29 October tarihinde Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayramı) kutlanır; bu tarih, Cumhuriyetin ilan edildiği gündür. 15 July tarihi ise 2016 yılında resmî tatil olan Democracy and National Unity Day olarak belirlenmiştir.
| Gün | Tarih | Anlamı | Okullarda tipik etkinlik |
|---|
| Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı | 23 April | Meclisin açılışı ve çocukların önemi | Çocukların hazırladığı programlar |
| Atatürk'ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı | 19 May | Atatürk'ün anılması, gençlik ve spor | Spor karşılaşmaları, şenlikler |
| Zafer Bayramı | 30 August | Millî zaferin anılması | Atatürk heykeli önünde tören |
| Cumhuriyet Bayramı | 29 October | Cumhuriyetin ilanı | Bayrak ve marş töreni |
| Demokrasi ve Millî Birlik Günü | 15 July | Demokrasi ve birlik değerleri | Konferanslar, film gösterimleri |
New Year's Eve 31 December'de kutlanır; insanlar yeni yılı birbirlerinin sağlığına kavuşarak karşılar. St Patrick's Day 17 March'ta İrlanda'da kutlanır ve halka yeşil kıyafet giyer. Chinese New Year ay takvimine dayandığı için her yıl farklı tarihlerde, ocak veya şubat aylarında kutlanır.
4. Tarihler ve Zaman İfadeleri
İngilizcede tarihler gün adından sonra sıra sayısıyla yazılır: on the twenty-ninth of October, kısaca on 29 October. Gün adı on ile, ay adı in ile, saat at ile gelir: The ceremony starts at 9 a.m. in October ve on 29 October ayrımına dikkat edilmelidir. Tarih bildiren on sonrasında gün adı ya da sayı gelir. Sıra sayıları çoğunlukla kısaltma biçiminde yazılır: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 21st, 29th. Every year veya each year ifadesi yıllık tekrarlanan olayları anlatır: Every year we watch fireworks on Republic Day.
5. Fiiller, Ön Ekler ve Edilgen Yapı
Kutlama anlatırken şu fiiller sık kullanılır: celebrate a holiday, hold a ceremony, spend time with the family, decorate the street, gather in the square, parade through the town, wear traditional costumes, light fireworks (brist), perform a play. Spend fiilinden sonra isim gelir; bu yüzden spend to celebrate yanlış, spend the holiday with relatives doğrudur. Olayların nasıl yapıldığı anlatılırken edilgen yapı (passive voice) kullanılır: The concert is held every spring, The streets are decorated with lanterns.
- Tarih sıra sayısıyla verilir: on the twenty-ninth of October ya da on 29 October.
- Gün resmî bir ulusal gündür, bu yüzden is celebrated edilgen yapısı uygundur.
- Tören öznesi okul olduğu için eylem are held biçiminde edilgen çekimlenir.
- İçerik iki fiille özetlenir: the flag is hoisted ve the national anthem is sung.
Örnek cümle: Republic Day is celebrated on the twenty-ninth of October, and ceremonies are held at school, where the flag is hoisted and the national anthem is sung.
Halloween, Christmas, New Year's Eve, St Patrick's Day, Chinese New Year, Diwali, Cinco de Mayo ve Thanksgiving ise dünyada yaygın kutlamalardır. Tarihler on + gün ile yazılır, sıra sayıları kullanılır ve olayların yapılış biçimi edilgen yapıyla anlatılır.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
- in 29 October demek: gün sayısıyla birlikte yalnızca on kullanılır; in yalnız aylarla kullanılır.
- spend to celebrate yazmak: spend fiilinden sonra isim gelir, fiil gelmez.
- National Day celebrate yazmak: günün kendisi kutlama yapmaz, bu yüzden is celebrated edilgen biçimi gerekir.
- 29 October 1923 ifadesini on 29 October 1923 yazmadan yılı başa koymak: tam tarihte gün sayısından sonra yıl in değil, doğrudan yazılır.
- Halloween on 1 November demek: Halloween 31 October'da kutlanır; 1 November All Saints' Day'dır.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn how to describe a national day or a festival in English. You will study the vocabulary of ceremonies and celebrations — ceremony, parade, fireworks, the national anthem, flag, wreath, march, decoration, procession — and the verbs that go with them.
You will also learn how to write dates correctly, because every celebration has one. You will practise on with days, in with months and at with times, and you will use ordinal numbers in both spoken and written form: on the twenty-third of April and on 23 April.
Finally you will use the passive voice for events that are organised by people in general: The ceremony is held at the school every year. By the end you should be able to write a ten-line description of any celebration with the correct date, the correct verbs and no personal pronouns.
Ön Bilgi
Before you start, you need three structures.
First, ordinal numbers from first to thirty-first. You already know the cardinals; the ordals add -th with the irregular forms first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth, twelfth, twentieth. You need them for every date in this lesson.
Second, the present passive: is / are + past participle. You need it because a celebration does not organise itself: The flag is hoisted, the anthem is sung, fireworks are lit. If you try to say these sentences with a personal subject, you have to invent a subject, which is awkward.
Third, verbs followed by a noun or by -ing. In this topic you will use celebrate (a day), hold (a ceremony), attend (an event), spend (time), decorate (a place) and gather (in a square). Knowing the noun each verb takes is what keeps the sentence clean.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short description, which is the level the exam asks for in a simple writing task.
Republic Day is celebrated on the twenty-ninth of October in Turkey. On that day flags are hoisted on public buildings and the national anthem is sung in schools. In the evening there are fireworks in the city centre, and families watch them together.
Notice three things: the passive carries the whole text, the date comes with on, and the evening activity is added with and. Try the same pattern for a celebration in your own family: ... is celebrated on... Flags are... and people...
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Write a description of a national day in six steps.
- Step 1 — Name the day and the date. Youth and Sports Day is celebrated on the nineteenth of May.
- Step 2 — Say why it is marked. It commemorates the beginning of the national struggle. Use the passive because the day is marked by people in general.
- Step 3 — Describe the official part. A ceremony is held at the stadium and the anthem is sung.
- Step 4 — Describe what people do. Young people march through the streets and concerts are performed in the evening.
- Step 5 — Add one detail about food or clothes. Families spend the day outdoors and children wear the national colours.
- Step 6 — Close with a feeling. The day creates a strong sense of unity. Do not add new facts here.
Check your passive: every sentence above has is / are plus a past participle. If a sentence is missing that, add it.
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
National day, festival and holiday are not the same thing. Keep them apart with this table.
| Word | Organised by | How often | Example |
|---|
| national day | the state | once a year | Republic Day is a national day. |
| festival | a community | once a year, often several days | The spring festival lasts a week. |
| carnival | a city | before a religious season | The carnival fills the streets with music. |
| fair | a company or charity | at a fixed season | The school fair raises money for the library. |
| parade | a group or a town | on a special day | A parade moves down the main street. |
| ceremony | an institution | on an official day | The ceremony begins at nine. |
Tip: if the sentence names a government decision, the answer is national day; if it names a community activity, the answer is usually festival or carnival.
