Konu Anlatımı
Attractions: What Are They?
An attraction is a place that people visit for fun, learning or relaxation. Attractions may be commercial (a cafe, a cinema, a shopping mall), cultural (a museum, an art gallery, a theatre), sportive (a gym, a sports club, a stadium) or public (a library, a park). In this topic you will learn to say what you would like to do in these places, to describe them with adjectives and to talk about weekend plans.
Talking About What You Would Like to Do
To talk about wishes and polite requests English uses would like to + V1. The short form is 'd like to. After to we always use the first form of the verb. We never put the -ing form or the past form after it.
- I would like to watch a film tonight.
- Would you like to join our swimming club?
- We would like to have lunch at that cafe.
- She doesn't want to watch a horror film.
want to + V1 and would love to + V1 follow the same rule. The difference is in strength: want to is neutral, would like to is more polite and would love to is the most enthusiastic. In questions the subject comes before the phrase: Would you like to go?
Describing Places and Activities with Adjectives
Adjectives stand before the noun in English: a crowded cafe, a modern gym, an exciting sports club. Adjectives that describe a feeling end in -ed when they follow a person: I felt bored, She was excited. Adjectives that describe a thing end in -ing: a boring film, an interesting museum. When two adjectives are used together, an opinion adjective comes first and then an adjective of age, colour, size or shape: an interesting old cinema.
Making Plans with the Present Continuous
Use the present continuous (am/is/are + V-ing) for a plan that is already arranged. We often add at the moment, tonight, tomorrow, this weekend, next Saturday or on Monday. The structure is Subject + am/is/are + V-ing + time expression. We are watching a film on Saturday. is correct; We watch a film on Saturday. usually describes a routine, and We are watch a film is simply wrong.
Useful Questions and Answers at a Venue
- How much is a ticket? → It costs fifteen lira.
- What time do you close? → We close at eleven.
- Do you have a membership for students?
- I'd like to make a reservation for two people.
- Are there any discounts for students?
- Is photography allowed inside the gallery?

Worked Example: A Saturday Plan
Selin: Would you like to go anywhere this Saturday? We would like to visit the science museum and then have lunch at the cafe next to it.
Burak: That sounds good, but I'd like to go to the gym first. I usually work out in the morning.
Selin: Fine. I am meeting my cousin at two, so we can take the bus together.
Burak: Great. Let me book the tickets now.
Notice the three structures: would like to + V1 for wishes (to visit, to go), present simple for a routine (I work out) and present continuous for an arrangement (I am meeting).
Özet
Bu konuda eğlence, kültür, spor ve boş zaman mekanlarının sözlüğünü öğrendik: cafe, cinema, theatre, museum, art gallery, gym, sports club, library ve park. İstek bildirmek için would like to + V1, tercih bildirmek için want to + V1 kalıbı kullanılır. Hafta sonu gibi önceden kararlaştırılmış planlar present continuous ile anlatılır. Mekan sıfatı isimden önce gelir; duygu sıfatları -ed, eşya sıfatları -ing ile biter. Bir mekânda fiyat için How much is it?, karşılığında It costs... denir.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
- to + V-ing yazmak: would like to ifadesinden sonra yalın fiil gelir, I would like going değil I would like to go denir.
- Planı alışkanlık sanmak: bilet alınmış bir gösteri için present continuous, her hafta tekrarlanan bir etkinlik için present simple kullanılır.
- Duygu ve eşya sıfatını karıştırmak: The film was boring filmin, The audience was bored seyircinin özelliğidir.
- Sıfat sırasını bozmak: değerlendirme sıfatı yaş/renk/ölçü sıfatından önce gelir: an interesting old cinema.
- Preposition karıştırmak: gösteri için at the cinema, alıştırma için in the gym, sahne için on the stage denir.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn to talk about places people visit in their free time. You will study the vocabulary of attractions — cafe, cinema, theatre, museum, art gallery, gym, sports club, stadium, library, park, shopping mall — and the activities that belong to each one, such as have lunch, watch a film, work out, borrow a book, take part in a match.
You will learn the structures for wishes and plans: would like to + base form for a polite wish, want to for a neutral wish, would love to for enthusiasm, and the present continuous for an arrangement that is already made.
You will also learn the questions and answers used at a venue (How much is a ticket?, What time do you close?, Do you have a student discount?, I'd like to make a reservation), the prepositions that go with each place, and the difference between -ed and -ing adjectives.
Ön Bilgi
You need three things ready.
First, would like to + base form. After to in this expression the verb never takes -ing: I would like to go, not I would like going.
Second, the present continuous for future arrangements. A ticket already bought, or a meeting already agreed, is expressed with am / is / are + V-ing plus a time word: We are watching a film on Saturday.
Third, the -ed and -ing adjectives: I feel bored (my feeling) but the film is boring (the film causes the feeling). This distinction appears in almost every description of an attraction.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short plan and notice the three structures.
Would like to visit and I'd like to go express wishes. I usually work out is a routine, so it takes the present simple. I am meeting my cousin at two is already arranged, so it takes the present continuous.
Now write a similar five-line dialogue about a Saturday plan with two friends.
İleri Örnek
Compare an informal plan with a polite request by e-mail.
Informal: Are you free on Saturday? We are going to the new cinema at seven. Want to come?
Formal: Dear Sir or Madam, I would like to make a reservation for four people on Saturday evening at eight. Could you please confirm whether there is a student discount and whether photography is allowed inside the gallery? Thank you in advance.
The informal version uses contractions and a tag question. The formal version uses full forms, a polite purpose and two questions. In a writing task, the opening line of the instruction decides which register to use.
