Konu Anlatımı
Types of Schools — Okul Türleri
Bu türlerle ilgili örnek cümle: I go to a state school in the city centre, but my cousin studies at a private one.
Regular and Extracurricular Activities — Düzenli ve Ders Dışı Etkinlikler
Regular activities, ders programındaki etkinliklerdir: lessons, homework, tests ve class projects. Extracurricular activities ise ders saatleri dışında yapılan etkinliklerdir: debate club, drama club, robotics, music, sports teams ve volunteer work. Bu etkinlikler yalnız eğlence değil, sorumluluk ve iş birliği becerisi de kazandırır. Örneğin We take part in various clubs after school cümlesi, ders dışı katılımı; I have got maths and chemistry on Tuesdays cümlesi ise düzenli ders programını anlatır. 'Take part in' ve 'be a member of' kalıpları bu tür cümlelerde sık kullanılır.
School Anxiety and Stress — Okul Kaygısı ve Stresi
Birçok öğrenci sınav dönemlerinde stressed (stresli), anxious (kaygılı) veya under pressure (baskı altında) hisseder. Bu durumun belirtileri uykusuzluk, iştahsızlık, baş ağrısı ve konsantrasyon güçlüğüdür. Nedenleri arasında yoğun ödev yükü, sürekli not karşılaştırması, erken kalkma ve arkadaş gruplarına uyum sağlama bulunur. I feel anxious before the final exams. ve I am under pressure because I have three tests this week. gibi cümleler bu duyguları ifade eder. Kaygının bir ölçüde normal olduğu, ancak sürmesi hâlinde bir yetişkin ya da rehber öğretmenle konuşulması gerektiği unutulmamalıdır.
Coping Strategies — Başa Çıkma Yolları
Stresi azaltmak için should ve could ile öneriler sunulur: You should make a study plan, You could take short breaks every thirty minutes, You should talk to your teacher about the workload. Düzenli uyku, egzersiz ve kısa molalar verimi artırır. Karşılaştırma yerine kendi gelişimine bakmak da önemlidir. Öneri cümlelerinde fiil yalın hâlde kalır; 'should to' ya da 'should taking' gibi kalıplar yanlıştır.
In this lesson you will learn how to talk about the different kinds of schools in English and how to compare them fairly. You will study school-type vocabulary such as state school, private school, vocational school, boarding school and international school, and you will see which adjectives usually go with each of them.
The second aim is to describe school stress honestly. You will learn adjectives for feelings (stressed, anxious, under pressure, nervous), the nouns that name the causes (workload, deadline, exam period) and the verbs we use for coping (manage, reduce, cope with, relax).
By the end of the lesson you should be able to write a short paragraph that (1) mentions the type of school you attend, (2) lists two regular and two extracurricular activities, and (3) gives one piece of advice for a classmate using should or could.
Ön Bilgi
Before this lesson you need three things ready. First, the present simple for routines: We have three lessons on Mondays. Most sentences about school life are habitual, so the tense does the main work.
Second, a small set of school nouns: lesson, subject, homework, term, break, laboratory, staffroom. You do not need many words, but you need to spell them correctly.
Third, adjectives of feeling used with the verb be: I am tired. When you describe stress you will combine these adjectives with a cause introduced by because: I am stressed because the exam period starts next week. If you can build that sentence pattern confidently, the grammar of this lesson will be easy.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read the short text below. It is the kind of message a student writes in a school magazine.
Our school is a state school, so lessons are free and we do not wear a uniform. It has about nine hundred students, a large library and two science laboratories. I also attend the drama club on Wednesdays.
Notice how the text answers three simple questions: what type of school is it, what facilities does it have, and what do you do after lessons? Keep those three questions in your notebook, because almost every school description is built from them.
Now try the same pattern with your own school: My school is... It has... I attend... after lessons.
İleri Örnek
Compare the two texts. They describe the same topic but for different readers.
Informal, for a friend: My school is huge and the lessons are OK, but the corridors are always crowded. We have a robotics club, which is brilliant.
Formal, for a pen pal: Our school is a large secondary school with approximately one thousand two hundred students. In addition to academic lessons, we offer a robotics club and a volleyball team.
The difference is not only vocabulary. Informal writing uses short adjectives and comments (OK, brilliant, huge); formal writing uses numbers, in addition to, and neutral adjectives. In the exam, look for the register the task asks for before you start writing.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Write a paragraph about stress at your school by following these five steps.
- Step 1 — Name the cause. Choose one: a difficult test, too much homework, a short deadline, a noisy classroom.
- Step 2 — Describe the feeling. Use an adjective with be: I feel anxious. / I am under a lot of pressure.
- Step 3 — Add the reason. Use because or so: I feel anxious because the test is on Friday.
- Step 4 — Give one solution. Use should or could: I should start revising earlier. / We could ask the teacher for extra practice.
- Step 5 — Check the verbs. After should and could the verb stays in the base form: should start, never should to start or should starts.
Model answer: I feel anxious before the science test because there are forty definitions to learn. My teacher says I should revise in short sessions, so I could study twenty minutes every evening.
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
Use this table to keep the school types apart. Exam questions often give a definition and ask you to find the matching type.
| Type of school | Who pays | Key feature | Typical sentence |
|---|
| state school | the government | free, large classes | She goes to a state school near her home. |
| private school | the family | fees, smaller classes | His parents pay for a private school. |
| vocational school | mixed | job training plus lessons | He learns car repair at a vocational school. |
| boarding school | the family | students live on site | She stays at a boarding school during the week. |
| international school | the family or a company | classes in a foreign language | They study in English at an international school. |
Reading tip: if a sentence mentions living at school, the answer is boarding; if it mentions training for a job, the answer is vocational.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
These are the five mistakes that cost marks most often in this topic.
- Adding a plural -s to the school type. Write two private schools, not two privates school. The adjective keeps its singular form even when the noun is plural.
- Confusing uniform and uniformly. Uniform is the noun you wear; uniformly means in the same way. Write We wear a grey uniform, not We wear uniformly.
- Using a lot pressure. Pressure is uncountable, so there is no -s and no a: I am under a lot of pressure, not a lot pressures.
- Putting to after a modal. You should to relax is wrong; write You should relax.
- Mixing up anxious and excited. Both can describe waiting for something, but only one is negative. I am anxious about the exam means fear; I am excited about the trip means happy expectation.
Özet
School life vocabulary falls into three groups: the type of school, the activities, and the feelings that come with them.
- Types: state, private, vocational, boarding, international. The type answers who pays and who runs the school.
- Activities: regular activities are lessons, homework and tests; extracurricular activities are clubs, teams and volunteer work. Use attend, take part in or be a member of for clubs.
- Stress: stressed, anxious, nervous, under pressure. Always connect the feeling to a cause with because, then offer a solution with should or could.
The grammar that carries the whole topic is the present simple plus the modal verbs; if you keep both clean, your paragraph will be clear and correct.
Kendini Dene
Test yourself. Write the answers in full sentences, then check the key below.
- Which type of school trains students for a job as well as teaching lessons?
- Complete: She ____ at a boarding school during the week. (stay / stays / is staying / staying)
- Choose the correct sentence: (a) I am under a lot of pressure. (b) I am under a lot of pressures. (c) I am under lot of pressure.
- Rewrite correctly: You should to speak with the school counsellor.
- Fill in: I feel anxious ____ the maths test is tomorrow. (because / because of / so / but)
- Write one sentence about a club you attend. Use take part in and one adjective.
Answer key: 1) A vocational school. 2) stays — present simple, third person singular. 3) (a) — pressure is uncountable, so it takes no -s and no article of its own. 4) You should speak with the school counsellor. — a modal is followed by the base form without to. 5) because — it joins two clauses; because of would need a noun phrase such as because of the test. 6) Any correct sentence, e.g. I take part in the drama club and it is very enjoyable.
