Transport and Accommodation
- Transport: plane, train, bus, coach, ferry, subway, taxi — We travelled by plane.
- Accommodation: hotel, hostel, motel, guesthouse, campsite — We stayed at a hostel.
- At the airport: check-in, security, gate, baggage claim — Check-in opens two hours before the flight.
Travel Plans and Holidays
Seyahat metinleri üç zaman referansını bir arada kullanır: geçmiş deneyimler (Last summer we stayed in a small hotel), sabit düzenlemeler (We are leaving on Friday) ve henüz kesinleşmemiş niyetler (We are going to visit the old castle).
Bilet ve otel rezervasyonu gibi önceden kararlaştırılmış düzenlemeler present continuous ile; henüz yapılmamış planlar ise going to veya will ile anlatılır.
City Attractions and Activities
Bir şehirde yapılabilecek etkinlikler ve görülacak yerler city attractions and activities başlığında toplanır. Yaygın yerler: cafes, cinemas, gyms, sports clubs, museums, parks ve historical squares.
Etkinlik anlatırken can ve there are yapıları kullanılır: You can watch a film at the cinema. ve There are two sports clubs near the square. Yer önerisinde bulunmak için How about...? ve Let's... kalıpları uygundur.
Bir yerin artısını ve eksisini belirtirken advantage ve disadvantage kelimeleri gerekir: The gym is close to my home, but it is usually crowded. Bu tür cümlelerde but iki karşıt bilgiyi birleştirir.
Seyahat Metinlerinde Zaman, Yer ve Ulaşım
Seyahat cümlelerinde yer için in, at, on ayrımı zorunludur: in the city, at the airport, on the plane. Ulaşım araçları by ile söylenir: by bus, by train, by plane; yürüyerek gidildiğinde ise on foot kullanılır, by foot denmez.
Gelecek seyahat planı kesinleşmişse present continuous ile anlatılır: We are flying to Izmir on Monday. Henüz karar verilmemiş niyetlerde be going to ya da will tercih edilir. Bilet, saat ve katılımcı bilgisi varsa cevap daima present continuous olacaktır.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn the vocabulary of travel: transport (plane, coach, ferry, subway), documents (passport, boarding pass, visa, ticket), places to stay (hotel, hostel, guesthouse, campsite) and travel actions (book, check in, pack, depart, arrive, delay).
You will learn the preposition rules that go with travel: by for transport (by train), on for planes and ships (on the plane), in for cars and cities (in the car, in the city), and on foot for walking.
Finally you will study the three future patterns used in travel texts: the present continuous for arrangements already made, be going to for intentions, and will for decisions taken while speaking. Travel writing mixes all three, and choosing correctly is what this topic measures.
Ön Bilgi
You need three things before the lesson.
First, countable and uncountable nouns, because luggage and baggage are uncountable: My luggage is heavy, not my luggages are. You say a suitcase or two bags when you count.
Second, the present continuous for arrangements: We are flying to Izmir on Monday. This is the standard way to describe a trip that is already booked.
Third, some polite request forms used at a desk or on the phone: I'd like a return ticket, Could I have a window seat?, Is breakfast included? These fixed phrases are tested in dialogue-completion items.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short travel note written after a trip.
We travelled to Antalya by plane last July. Our flight left at seven in the morning, but there was a short delay at the airport. We stayed at a small guesthouse near the harbour and we went sightseeing every day. I bought souvenirs for my classmates. It was the first time I had seen the sea, and I will never forget it.
The note answers four questions: how you travelled, where you stayed, what you did, and what you brought back. That order is safe for any travel writing task.
Now write six sentences about your last journey using the same four questions.
İleri Örnek
Compare a personal travel story with a booking message.
Story: We took the night bus because the tickets were cheaper. It was uncomfortable, but we saved money and we arrived early in the morning.
Booking message: Dear Sir or Madam, I would like to book a double room for two nights from 14 to 16 March. Could you please confirm whether breakfast is included and whether there is parking near the hotel? I am arriving on the ten o'clock train. Thank you in advance.
The story uses active past-tense verbs and personal comments. The message uses polite request forms and no past tense. If the task mentions a hotel, a station or a travel agency, the second register is the one that scores.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Follow these steps to write a travel plan without tense mistakes.
- Step 1 — Decide how certain the plan is. If the ticket is bought, treat it as an arrangement; if you only hope to do it, treat it as an intention.
- Step 2 — Use the right pattern. Arrangement: We are leaving on Friday at eight. Intention: We are going to visit the castle. Decision now: I'll book the tickets this afternoon.
- Step 3 — Add the transport preposition. by bus, on the plane, in a taxi, on foot. Never by foot.
- Step 4 — Add the accommodation noun. We are staying at a hostel. Use at for the general type and in for a room: in room 204.
- Step 5 — Add one problem and one solution. The departure was delayed, so we had lunch at the airport. Travel texts almost always contain a small problem; leaving it out makes the text unreal.
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
Transport words and place prepositions cause most of the errors in this topic.
| Item | Rule | Example |
|---|
| by + transport | no article | by train, by plane, by ferry |
| on the / a + plane, train, bus | article used with on | We met on the train. |
| in the / a + car, taxi | enclosed vehicles | She is in a taxi. |
| on foot | walking; never by foot | The museum is ten minutes on foot. |
| at the airport | the building as a place | We waited at the airport. |
| in the city / in Antalya | larger areas and cities | There is a lot to do in the city. |
| luggage / baggage | uncountable | My luggage is too heavy. |
| a suitcase / two bags | countable containers | I have two bags and a suitcase. |
Check: if you can count the thing, use a countable noun such as suitcase; if you cannot, use luggage.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Six mistakes appear regularly in travel writing.
- Writing by foot. The correct expression is on foot: We went home on foot.
- Making luggage plural. Luggages does not exist. Say three suitcases or a lot of luggage.
- Using in the plane. For planes and ships use on: on the plane, on the ferry. In is for cars and taxis.
- Saying I travel with plane. With by there is no article: I travel by plane.
- Confusing trip, journey and travel. A trip usually includes a return; a journey is the movement itself; travel is the general idea or activity.
- Writing I am going to the airport tomorrow at six, I booked the ticket in the wrong tense. If the ticket is bought, the arrangement takes the present continuous: I am leaving... at six tomorrow.
