Konu Anlatımı

be used to vs get used to

Bu üç yapı sık karıştırılır. Anlam farkları şöyledir:

YapıAnlamÖrnek
used to + V1Geçmişte yapardı (artık yapmıyor)I used to get up late.
be used to + V-ing/nounAlışkın olmak (durum)I am used to getting up early.
get used to + V-ing/nounAlışmak (süreç)I am getting used to getting up early.

Anlam İnceliği

Alışkanlık İfadelerinin Kullanım Alanları

be used to + V-ing/isim zaten alışmış olduğumuz durumları anlatır: I am used to waking up early. Burada önemli olan, kişinin bu duruma artık yabancı olmadığıdır.

get used to + V-ing/isim ise alışma sürecini, yani henüz tamamlanmamış geçişi ifade eder: I am getting used to the new timetable. Bu yapı zamanla gelişen uyumu vurgular.

Üçüncü yapı olan used to + V1 ise geçmiş alışkanlıkları anlatır ve bugünü ilgilendirmez. Üçünü karıştırmamak için üç soru sorulur: durum mu, süreç mi, geçmiş mi?

  • Durum: be used to — I am used to the traffic.
  • Süreç: get used to — I am getting used to the traffic.
  • Geçmiş: used to — I used to drive slowly.

Alışma ifadeleri günlük yaşamda çok yaygındır: yeni bir şehre, iş düzenine veya okul saatlerine uyum anlatılırken get used to, uyum tamamlanmışken be used to kullanılır.

Sınavlarda en sık to'nun ardından V-ing gelip gelmediğine bakılır; çünkü to burada edattır ve mastar değil -ing biçimini gerektirir. Bu ayrımda hata yapıldığında cümle hatalı kabul edilir.

Anlam Farkları ve Örnekler

Be used to ve get used to gibi yapılar, günlük hayatta sıkça kullanılan ancak anlamda önemli farklılıklar gösteren ifadelerdir. Bu ifadelerin doğru kullanımını anlamak için önce her birinin anlama ve kullanım alanlarını net bir şekilde belirlemek gerekir. Örneğin, "I am used to waking up early" ifadesi, kişinin artık erken kalkmayı alışkanlık haline getirmiş olduğunu gösterirken, "I am getting used to the new timetable" ifadesi ise bu alışmanın henüz tamamlanmadığını vurgular. Bu tür farklılıklar, öğrencilerin dil bilgisi konusunda daha iyi anlama ve uygulama yeteneğine yardımcı olur.

İşte bu iki ifadenin anlam farkı, öğrencilerin günlük hayatta karşılaştıkları durumlarda doğru ifadeyi seçmesini sağlar. Be used to, alışkanlık zaten kazanılmış durumları ifade ederken, get used to ise alışma sürecini, yani henüz tamamlanmamış geçişleri vurgular.

Örneğin, yeni bir şehre taşınan bir kişi, "I am getting used to the local food" ifadesiyle yaşadığı alışma sürecini ifade edebilir.

This lesson separates three structures that look almost identical. used to + V1 describes the past, be used to + V-ing / noun describes something that is already normal for you, and get used to + V-ing / noun describes the process of becoming normal.

You will learn the questions that decide the answer: is the sentence about the past, about a settled state, or about a change in progress? Those three questions solve almost every exam item on this topic.

You will also see how these structures appear in everyday situations — moving to a new city, starting a new school year, learning a new timetable — and you will practise the form of to, which in be used to and get used to is a preposition, so it takes a noun or the -ing form.

Ön Bilgi

You need two things in place.

First, the difference between the base form and the -ing form. This is the heart of the lesson: after used to (the past structure) comes the base form, but after be used to and get used to comes a noun or the -ing form.

Second, the verb be in the present and past, because be used to can be used in any tense: I am used to, She was used to, They will be used to. The tense appears on be, never on used.

Also remember that get used to suggests effort and time, so it often appears with words such as still, gradually, soon, it took me a month.

Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam

Read these three sentences and see how the meaning changes.

I used to get up at seven. (In the past I got up at seven; I do not now.) I am used to getting up at six. (Getting up at six is normal for me now.) I am getting used to getting up at six. (It is becoming normal, but it is still an effort.)

Notice the position of to. In the first sentence to belongs to the infinitive; in the second and third it is a preposition and the verb that follows takes -ing.

Write the same three sentences about a change in your own life, using the same verbs.

İleri Örnek

Look at a longer text in which all three structures appear.

Two years ago my family moved to a much bigger city. At first I did not like it at all. I used to walk to my old school in ten minutes, but now I spend an hour on the bus. After a few months I got used to the traffic, and I found a shorter route. Now I am used to travelling with crowds and I even read on the bus.

The writer moves from the past (used to walk), through the process (got used to the traffic), to the settled state (I am used to travelling). This three-step order is a very common way to structure a paragraph about change, and it is worth copying.

Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek

Follow these steps to choose the right structure.

  1. Step 1 — Ask: is the sentence about the past only? If yes, and if the action or state has stopped, use used to + V1: I used to hate crowds.
  2. Step 2 — Ask: is the sentence about now? If the situation is already normal, use be used to + V-ing / noun: I am used to crowds.
  3. Step 3 — Ask: is the sentence about a change in progress? Use get used to + V-ing / noun: I am getting used to crowds.
  4. Step 4 — Choose the form after to. With the past structure, the base form. With be and get used to, a noun or the -ing form.
  5. Step 5 — Check where the tense sits. In be used to the tense is on be: She was used to the noise, not She used to the noise.

Karşılaştırma Tablosu

This table is the whole lesson in one place.

StructureTimeWhat follows toExample
used to + V1past onlybase formI used to walk to school.
be used to + V-ing / nounpresent (or any tense of be)noun or -ingI am used to walking to school.
get used to + V-ing / nounprocess, often present continuousnoun or -ingI am getting used to walking to school.

Test yourself with three questions: Has it stopped? Use used to. Is it already normal? Use be used to. Is it becoming normal? Use get used to.

Also note: be used to is not passive. In the passive, used is a participle that describes what happens to something: This room is used for meetings.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar

Five mistakes are common here.

  • Using the base form after be used to. I am used to get up early is wrong; the preposition takes the -ing form: I am used to getting up early.
  • Using the -ing form after the past structure. I used to getting up early is wrong; write I used to get up early.
  • Dropping be in the state structure. I used to the noise means nothing. You need a form of be: I am used to the noise.
  • Treating get used to as a finished state. I get used to the timetable usually needs a time expression or the continuous: I am getting used to the timetable or I soon got used to the timetable.
  • Confusing the passive be used for with the habit structure. This knife is used to cut bread describes the purpose of the object; I am used to cutting bread describes your own habit.

Özet

Three structures, three questions.

  • used to + V1: the past, and it has stopped. The verb after to is the base form.
  • be used to + V-ing / noun: a settled state; the situation is already normal. The tense sits on be.
  • get used to + V-ing / noun: a process; the situation is becoming normal. Often used with gradually, soon, still.
  • Key test: look at the word that follows to. A base form means the past structure; a noun or -ing form means one of the other two.

Kendini Dene

Answer in full sentences and then check the key.

  1. Complete: I am used to ____ (get) up early now.
  2. Which sentence is about a process? (a) I am used to the noise. (b) I am getting used to the noise. (c) I used to the noise.
  3. Rewrite correctly: She used to living in a big city, but she moved last year.
  4. Fill in: It took me two months to get used to ____ (work) at night.
  5. Is This laboratory is used to test materials about a habit or a purpose?
  6. Write three sentences about your first week at a new school. Use used to, be used to and get used to once each.

Answer key: 1) getting — to is a preposition in be used to, so the verb takes the -ing form. 2) (b) — getting used to shows the change in progress. 3) She used to live in a big city, but she moved last year. — the past structure takes the base form. 4) working — again a preposition followed by the -ing form. 5) A purpose — the passive describes what the laboratory is for. 6) Any three correct sentences, e.g. I used to study at a small school near my house. I am getting used to the longer journey. Now I am used to the new timetable.
