Reading: A Turkish Wedding Tradition
Turkish weddings have many colourful traditions. Before the wedding, the bride's family and the groom's family meet to decide the details. On the wedding day, the bride wears a beautiful white dress, and the guests throw rice or coins for good luck. At the end of the ceremony, the couple takes the "first dance" together. In some regions, friends tie a red ribbon around the bride's waist, and the groom removes it. This is a symbol of joy and love. Although modern weddings are different from the past, most families still keep these traditions alive because they bring people together.
Traditions and Customs: Anlatım Kalıpları
Tradition, kuşaklar boyu aktarılan bir gelenektir; custom ise bir topluluğun olağan davranışıdır: It is a tradition to visit the elderly on holidays.
Geleneksel etkinlikler anlatılırken present simple ve sıklık zarfları (usually, often, every year) kullanılır. Bağlantı kalıpları (first, then, after the ceremony) törenin aşamalarını sırayla aktarır.
Sınav Odaklı: Gelenek Anlatımında Zaman ve Amaç
Gelenekler genel bir gerçek olduğu için present simple ile anlatılır: People light candles on special days. Geçmişte yapılıp artık yapılmayan geleneklerde ise used to devreye girer: My grandmother used to make sweets at home. Zaman ifadeleri için edatlar değişmez: in May, on the first day, in 1920.
Bir geleneğin amacını anlatırken to + V1 ve in order to + V1 yapıları kullanılır: People visit their relatives in order to show respect. Amaç cümlesinde fiil yalın kalır; to showing gibi bir yapı İngilizcede yoktur. Bu ayrım, amaç sorularında doğru şıkkı bulmanın tek yoludur.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn how to describe a tradition or a custom in English. You will study the vocabulary of celebration — festival, feast, ceremony, ritual, parade, costume, heritage, superstition, symbol — and the verbs that go with them: gather, greet, light candles, pass down, keep alive, take place.
You will learn to answer the five questions that describe any celebration: what it is called, when it takes place, who takes part, how people celebrate and why it matters. Those five questions turn a list of words into a paragraph.
Finally you will compare past and present customs using used to and the present simple, and you will use although to show that a tradition continues even when life changes.
Ön Bilgi
You need three things ready.
First, the present simple for facts that are always true: Families gather at the table. Traditions are described in the present simple, not in the future.
Second, prepositions of time. Celebrations are full of dates: at Easter, in spring, on the first day, during the ceremony, after dinner. Each of these has a fixed preposition and mixing them up is a common error.
Third, the present passive, because many tradition sentences have no personal subject: Rice is thrown for good luck, Candles are lit at sunset. Without the passive you would need an invented subject.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short description and see how the five questions are answered.
The spring festival takes place in April, after the cold months end. Families gather in the parks and children fly kites. People wear bright clothes and share traditional food. The festival is a time to welcome the new season and to spend time together.
What: the spring festival. When: in April. Who: families and children. How: kites, clothes, food. Why: to welcome the new season. Every sentence answers one of the questions, and none of them is wasted.
Now write five sentences about a family custom of your own, one for each question.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Follow these steps to describe a custom accurately.
- Step 1 — Name it and say when. The Nazar Boncuk is a custom that is common all year, but it is especially popular at weddings.
- Step 2 — Say who takes part. Guests and family members take part in the ceremony.
- Step 3 — Describe the actions with the passive where there is no personal subject. A blue bead is pinned to the bride's dress and a small gift is given to each guest.
- Step 4 — Explain the meaning. It is believed to protect people from bad luck. Use It is believed / It is said for beliefs rather than stating them as facts about your own experience.
- Step 5 — Show that the tradition continues. Although life has changed, most families keep this custom alive. The word although makes the contrast explicit.
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
Custom words are often confused. This table separates the most common pairs.
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|
| custom | an accepted way of behaving in a group | Taking off your shoes at the door is a custom. |
| tradition | a belief or practice passed down through generations | Friday dinners are a family tradition. |
| ritual | a fixed series of actions with meaning | Making coffee has its own ritual. |
| superstition | a belief not based on reason | Breaking a mirror is a superstition. |
| heritage | what is inherited from the past | The dance is part of our heritage. |
| generation | all the people born about the same time | Three generations ate at the same table. |
| ancestor | a person in your family from long ago | Our ancestors lived in this valley. |
Careful: custom is usually about behaviour, tradition about something handed down, and superstition about belief. The three are not interchangeable.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Five mistakes are typical of this topic.
- Using in with festival names that take at. at Eid, at the festival, but in Ramadan and in April. Learn the common names as fixed phrases.
- Forgetting the passive. People throw rice is fine, but Rice is thrown is usually better when the text describes the custom rather than one event.
- Confusing custom and costume. A custom is a way of behaving; a costume is what you wear.
- Saying the tradition is celebrate. Use the passive participle: The tradition is celebrated every spring.
- Describing a custom as a single event. We celebrated a custom yesterday is odd. A custom is repeated, so the present simple is the natural choice.
Özet
Describing a tradition needs nouns, time prepositions and the passive.
- Nouns: custom, tradition, ritual, festival, feast, ceremony, heritage, superstition, symbol, generation.
- Verbs: gather, greet, light, pass down, keep alive, take place, celebrate, believe.
- Five questions: what, when, who, how, why. Answering all five gives a complete paragraph.
