Konu Anlatımı

What Will We Learn? — Bu derste ne öğreneceğiz?

This lesson is about the difference between two tenses that look almost identical but are not: the present simple and the present continuous. English uses one of them for facts and routines, and the other for what is happening right now or around now. Mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes in the exam, so this lesson builds the rule carefully and then gives you a way to check your own sentences.

By the end of this lesson you should be able to do the following.

Prerequisites — Ön bilgi

Before starting, make sure you can do the following. If any of these is difficult, go back to it first; every example in this lesson depends on them.

A note on why this lesson matters: A sentence can be grammatically correct and still be wrong for the situation. If someone asks What are you doing? and you answer I read a book, your English is fine but your choice of tense is not. Choosing the tense is a separate skill from building the form, and this lesson works on both.

Present Simple: Meaning and Use

The present simple describes three things: permanent facts, regular routines, and general truths. None of them is tied to a single moment, so English chooses a tense that has no progressive meaning.

Present Simple: Form and the Third Person Ending

For I, you, we, they and singular nouns, the present simple is the base form of the verb with no ending: I work. They live. My sister studies.

For he, she, it and singular nouns, the verb normally takes an -s ending. This is the single most frequently missed detail in written English.

SubjectVerbExample
I / You / We / Theywork (no ending)They work in the afternoon.
He / She / Itworks (+s)She works in the afternoon.
I / You / We / Theystudy (no ending)They study English every day.
He / She / Itstudies (+ies)He studies English every day.

Spelling of the -s ending. Most verbs simply add -s. Three groups need something extra.

Present Simple: Questions and Negatives

The present simple uses do and does, not be. This is the main difference from the present continuous, which uses am / is / are.

There is one group of exceptions worth learning: the verb have forms its negative and question with has and have without do. She has breakfast at seven. Does she have breakfast at seven? She doesn't have breakfast at school.

Present Continuous: Meaning and Use

The present continuous is built on am / is / are plus the -ing form. It describes an action that is in progress, and it has two main uses.

Present Continuous: Form and the -ing Spelling

SubjectForm of beExample
IamI am reading now.
He / She / ItisHe is reading now.
You / We / TheyareThey are reading now.

Spelling of the -ing form. This is where most written mistakes happen, so learn the rules as rules, not as examples.

Two verbs keep the final e: be becomes being, and see becomes seeing. Learn these two as exceptions rather than trying to force them into a rule.

Present Continuous: Questions and Negatives

Because the tense already contains am / is / are, no auxiliary do is needed.

A Simple Example: One Morning

Read the six sentences below and notice how the tense follows the meaning, not the subject.

(1) Ali gets up at seven every day. (2) Right now Ali is getting up. (3) He always eats breakfast quickly. (4) This morning he is eating it slowly. (5) His sister drinks tea at night. (6) At the moment she is drinking milk.

Sentences (1), (3) and (5) are present simple because they describe what normally happens. Sentences (2), (4) and (6) are present continuous because they describe what is happening at one particular moment. Notice also the -s in gets, eats, drinks: the subjects are Ali, he and his sister, all third person singular.

Adverbs and Verbs That Are Not Used in the Continuous

Some verbs describe states rather than actions. A state has no beginning and no end, so English does not put it into the progressive form.

CategoryVerbsCorrectIncorrect
Thinking and feelingknow, believe, understand, forget, love, like, wantI know the answer.*I am knowing the answer.
Possessionhave, own, belongThey have a new car.*They are having a new car.
Identitybe, seem, appear, look (when meaning seem)He is my brother.*He is being my brother.
Size and measurementmeasure, weigh, costThe bag weighs two kilos.*The bag is weighing two kilos.

Two important exceptions inside this group. First, think and have can be continuous when the meaning changes. I think he is right is an opinion; I am thinking about the exam is an activity taking place in the mind. Second, be in the continuous is used in a limited set of fixed expressions, mostly about behaviour that is temporary and unusual: You are being very rude today means the rudeness is temporary and is not the person's normal character.

Time Expressions: The Clue That Decides the Tense

If you are unsure which tense to use, look for a time expression in the sentence. The following table is the fastest decision procedure for the exam.

Time expressionTense to useExample
every day, usually, always, often, sometimes, neverPresent simpleHe usually cycles to school.
now, right now, at the moment, Look!, Listen!Present continuousHe is cycling to school now.
today, this week, this month (with a change)Present continuousHe is cycling this week instead of walking.
every day, on Mondays, in the morningsPresent simpleThe shop opens at nine every day.
at the moment, currentlyPresent continuousThe shop is closed at the moment.
in general, in fact, as a rulePresent simpleIn general, the shop opens on time.

Note the pair every day and today. Both point to a short period, but they point to different habits: every day describes a repeated routine, so it takes the present simple; today describes one single occasion, so it often takes the present continuous when something has changed.

Adverbs of Frequency and the Present Continuous

You already know the scale always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never. These words almost always go with the present simple, because they describe a repeated habit. She is always late is therefore unusual and needs an explanation: it means her lateness is a temporary feature of this period of her life.

However, one word in the group behaves differently. Now is not an adverb of frequency but an adverb of time, and it goes with the present continuous: I am working now. This is why now is not on the frequency scale at all.

There is one more common trap: the verb be followed by an adverb of frequency means something different from an action verb followed by one. He is never rude describes a permanent character trait. He is never working on Sundays describes a repeated action, and here is is present simple in meaning even though it is written with the be-verb.

Step-by-Step: Choosing the Right Tense

When you are not sure, work through these five questions in order. Stop at the first "yes".

  1. Is there a state verb in the sentence? If the main verb is know, like, want, have, believe, understand, love, need, seem or belong, use the present simple and stop here.
  2. Is there a time expression for right now? Words like now, at the moment, currently, and commands like Look! and Listen! point to the present continuous.
  3. Is there an adverb of frequency? Words like always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never point to the present simple.
  4. Is the action finished? If it started and finished at a definite time, you need the past simple, not either tense in this lesson.
  5. Is nothing in the sentence a clue? Then decide from the meaning. If it is a repeated habit, use the present simple. If it is happening around now, use the present continuous.

Worked application. Decide the tense for each sentence and justify it in one sentence.

(a) My father ___ (watch) the news every evening. (b) Be quiet! The baby ___ (sleep). (c) I usually walk to school but today I ___ (take) the bus. (d) She ___ (know) the answer. (e) They ___ (play) basketball right now.

Solution. (a) watches — because every evening is a repeated routine, so present simple with third person -s. (b) is sleeping — because Be quiet! is a command pointing to something happening now. (c) am taking — because today marks a temporary change from the usual habit. (d) knows — because know is a state verb and cannot be used in the continuous. (e) are playing — because right now points to the present moment.

Everyday Life: Where This Matters Outside the Exam

The same distinction appears in shops, on signs, and in ordinary conversation. A shop sign saying WE ARE CLOSED TODAY is present continuous because it describes a temporary state. A sign saying WE ARE OPEN FROM NINE TO SIX is present simple because it describes a permanent schedule. A friend who says I am studying tonight is telling you about a temporary plan, while I study every night is telling you about a habit.

The practical effect of the difference is real: the present continuous often softens a statement. You are being late is a temporary observation; You are always late is an accusation about a habit. In the same way, I am trying suggests effort happening now, while I try suggests general behaviour with no effort implied.

In a classroom, the teacher's instruction Write about what you are doing now is designed to produce present continuous answers, whereas Describe what you do every day is designed to produce present simple answers. Reading the instruction carefully saves more marks than any grammar rule.

A Harder Example: Exam-Style Analysis

The following short text contains both tenses. Analyse it sentence by sentence.

Mert gets up at half past six every day. This morning he is getting up earlier because he wants to catch the early bus. He usually eats breakfast at home, but today he is eating it at the school canteen. His friends usually wait for him at the gate, but today they are waiting at the bus stop. His sister knows nothing about the change.

Analysis.

What this example teaches. The tense does not depend on the subject, the length of the sentence or the type of information. It depends on the meaning: routine or fact means present simple; happening now or a temporary change means present continuous.

Concept Comparison Table — Present Simple and Present Continuous Side by Side

Everything in this lesson comes down to the contrast in the table below. Read the Test column first: that is the question you should ask yourself whenever you are unsure which tense a sentence needs.

TestPresent SimplePresent Continuous
What does it describe?A fact, a routine or a general truthAn action in progress at or around now
Form of the verbBase form; -s / -es / -ies on third person singularam / is / are plus the -ing form
Auxiliary in questionsDo or DoesAm, Is, Are
Negative worddo not / does notam not / is not / are not
Typical time wordsevery day, usually, always, often, sometimes, never, in generalnow, at the moment, currently, Look!
Describes a change? No; it describes what stays the sameYes; it often describes a temporary change
State verbsCan be used: I know him.Cannot be used: *I am knowing him.
Effect on the listenerStates a fact; sounds neutralSounds temporary; often softens the statement
Typical pairHe goes to school by bus.He is going to school by bus today.

Notice the last row. The two sentences differ by only two words, yet they say different things: the first describes a daily routine, the second describes what is happening today. Choosing the tense is therefore learning to notice a difference this small.

Common Mistakes

These are the errors that appear most often in the exam. For each one, the wrong version is given first, then the reason, then the correct version.

Summary

In short: The present simple describes facts, routines and general truths. It uses do / does for questions and negatives, and it takes an -s ending on third person singular subjects. The present continuous describes what is happening at or around the present moment, and it is built on am / is / are plus the -ing form. State verbs such as know, like, want, believe are not used in the continuous. Time expressions are the most reliable clue: now, at the moment point to the continuous, while always, usually, every day point to the simple.

Check Your Understanding — Kendin dene: üç soru

Answer the three questions below before you look at the answers, then compare your answers with the sample ones. Finding the difference between your answer and the sample one is what makes this lesson stick.

  1. Question 1: In the sentence Look! It ___ outside., which tense do you use and why? Write the full sentence and explain your choice in one sentence.
  2. Sample answer: Look! It is raining outside. The word Look! is a command that points to something visible at this moment, and the subject it takes is. So the tense is the present continuous, and the verb rain keeps its full form because rain does not change.
  3. Question 2: A friend says I usually walk to school, but today I ___ the bus. Fill the gap and explain why the two halves of the sentence use different tenses.
  4. Sample answer: I usually walk to school, but today I am taking the bus. The first half uses the present simple because usually describes a repeated habit. The second half uses the present continuous because today marks a temporary change from that habit. The contrast structure usually + simple, but today + continuous is one of the most frequent patterns in the exam.
  5. Question 3: Which of these two sentences is wrong, and why? (a) She is knowing the answer. (b) She knows the answer.
  6. Sample answer: Sentence (a) is wrong. The verb know is a state verb: it describes a state of the mind rather than an action, so it has no beginning, middle and end, and English does not put it into the progressive form. Sentence (b) is correct and takes the third person -s. Remember that think and have are the exceptions: I am thinking about the exam is fine because it describes an activity going on in the mind.

If you can do all three without looking at the samples, you have understood the nine functions of this lesson: what we will learn, prior knowledge, a simple example, harder examples, step-by-step solving, comparison tables, common mistakes, summary, and checking your understanding.

Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam

Günlük yaşamda ve mesleki bağlamda bir uygulama:

Sık Yapılan Hatalar

Does sorusunda ana fiile -s eklemek: Does she plays tennis? yanlıştır, çünkü -s eki zaten does üzerinde bulunur; doğru biçim Does she play tennis? olmalıdır.

Olumsuz cümlede does'tan sonra fiili korumak: He doesn't watches TV. hatası yaygındır; auxiliary fiil kullanıldığında ana fiil yalın hâle döner: He doesn't watch TV.

Sürekli anlam taşımayan fiili -ing ile kullanmak: I am wanting a new pen. yerine I want a new pen. denir; want, understand ve own gibi fiiller yalnızca Present Simple ile gelir.

Zaman zarfısını yok sayıp anlamı okumamak: every evening görünüyorsa Present Simple, at the moment görünüyorsa Present Continuous seçilir; yalnızca cümlenin ilk haline bakmak yetmez.

Üçüncü tekilde be fiilini unutmak: She going to school. cümlesi eksiktir; Present Continuous'da am/is/are fiili zorunludur: She is going to school.

Özet

Present Simple alışkanlıkları ve genel gerçekleri anlatır; üçüncü tekilde -s/-es eklenir, olumsuz ve soruda do/does kullanılır. Present Continuous o an süren veya geçici durumları ifade eder ve am/is/are + V-ing yapısını gerektirir.
