Önemli noktalar
- In English the adverb of frequency comes before the main verb but after the verb be.
- Always, usually, often and sometimes describe regular actions; rarely and never show low frequency.
- How often is the standard question for asking about frequency, and it takes a short answer.
- The present simple is used for habits, while the present continuous shows a change or what is happening now.
- In questions and negatives with does, the main verb loses its -s ending.
- Frequency adverbs are not normally used in the present continuous; if both are needed, the adverb follows the auxiliary.
- Twice a week, once a month and every day are time expressions that answer How often questions.
- Never and rarely already have a negative meaning, so they are not used together with another negative word in the same clause.
Formüller ve kurallar
- Subject + adverb of frequency + main verb: She often visits her grandmother.
- Subject + be (am/is/are) + adverb of frequency: He is always late for school.
- How often + do/does + subject + base verb...? — How often do you exercise? — Twice a week.
- Frequency scale from the most frequent to the least frequent: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never.
- Present simple for routines and general truths: I get up at half past six every morning.
- Present continuous for now and for temporary changes: I am getting up at six this week.
- Present simple question: Do you...? / Does he...? — Yes, I do. / No, he doesn't.
- Negative: do not / does not + adverb + base verb: She doesn't usually eat breakfast.
Sık yapılan hatalar
- Putting the adverb after the main verb: the pattern drinks always tea is wrong; the frequency adverb stands before the main verb, so the sentence must read She always drinks tea.
- Forgetting the third person -s ending: after a frequency adverb the verb still needs its ending, so He often play football must become He often plays football.
- Leaving the -s on the verb after does: the pattern Does he watches is incorrect because does already carries the third person ending, so the question must be Does he watch TV?
- Confusing usually with always: always means every single time, while usually means very often but not every time, so the adverb must match what the text really says.
- Using rarely with an extra negative word: rarely and never are negative in meaning on their own, so a second negative helper in the same clause is not used in English.
- Choosing the continuous form for a repeated action: a sentence with every day or usually describes a habit, so the present simple is required even when a place is mentioned as well.
Hızlı tekrar ipuçları
- Underline the frequency adverb first; it tells you which tense the sentence needs.
- Check the position rule: after be (He is never late) but before the main verb (She never eats chocolate).
- If you see does in a question, choose the option with the verb in its base form.
- In a comparison, remember that the shorter adjective comes first and the comparative ending follows it.
- When two habits are contrasted, use usually with the normal action and now with the exception.
- Read the whole text before answering; time words such as every day and at the moment decide the tense.
