Adverbs of Frequency and Their Order

Most of what we do in a day is not done once but again and again: we get up, we eat breakfast, we do our homework, we meet our friends. To say how often an action happens, English uses adverbs of frequency. The most common members of this group are always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely and never. They stand in one fixed order running from the most frequent action to the least frequent one: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never. This scale is extremely useful in the exam, because a sentence that says an action happens every single time expects the strongest member of the list, while an action that almost never happens expects one of the two weakest members.

AdverbMeaningExample sentence
alwaysevery single timeWe always have breakfast together on Sundays.
usuallyvery often, but not every timeHe usually walks to school instead of taking a bus.
oftenseveral times, not regularlyThey often play football in the park after class.
sometimesnow and then, not regularlyI sometimes help my mother in the kitchen.
rarelynot very oftenShe rarely watches television on school nights.
neverat no timeMy brother never drinks coffee in the evening.

The word always is the strongest member of the scale and never is the opposite end. Between them sit usually, often and sometimes, and the order above must be kept whenever adverbs of different strength appear in the same sentence: She is always early, but she is never late. A frequent student error is to place a weaker adverb before a stronger one, and another one is to add the word not to never; in English never is already negative and needs no extra helper.

Where the Adverb Goes: Verb be or Main Verb

The position of an adverb of frequency is not free. There is one clear rule that every learner must memorise: after the verb be the adverb comes next, and before the main verb it goes in every other case. In sentences with am, is or are the sequence is subject, auxiliary, adverb, then adjective or noun: He is always tired after a long day; They are never late for the school bus; The film is sometimes really funny. In all other sentences the adverb stands between the subject and the main verb: I often borrow books from the library; My father always drinks tea without sugar; The children usually do their homework in the evening. The reason is that the verb be is not a main verb in these sentences; it is only an auxiliary or a linking word, so the real action still needs the adverb in front of it.

Notice that the frequency adverb does not change the tense, but it does change the way the sentence is built. If you put the adverb in the wrong place, the sentence stops sounding like English even when every single word is known. A practical way to check your own writing is to read the sentence aloud and ask yourself whether the rhythm of the English sentence falls where the rhythm should fall.

Present Simple for Habits, Present Continuous for Changes

Habits and activities are normally described in the present simple, because a habit is a repeated action that is true in general. In the third person singular the verb takes the -s or -es ending: My sister watches a film every Friday; He goes to the swimming pool twice a week. The present continuous is used in two situations: what is happening at this moment, and a temporary change that replaces the normal habit. Compare the two sentences: I usually get up at seven o'clock. — I am getting up at six o'clock this week. The first one is the routine, the second one is the exception for these days only. Other expressions such as now, at the moment, today, this week or these days always lead to the continuous form, and a change of routine can also be shown by replacing the usual adverb: He usually drinks coffee, but he is drinking tea now.

One important detail is that adverbs of frequency do not normally appear in the present continuous, because the continuous already limits the action to a short period. If you need both ideas, put the adverb after the auxiliary: I am always tired on Mondays. If you want to say that somebody does not usually do something, use the present simple and keep the adverb in its normal position: She doesn't usually eat breakfast.

Asking About Frequency: How often...?

The most useful question for talking about habits is How often...? It is followed by do or does and the base form of the main verb, exactly like other present simple questions: How often do you visit your grandparents? — How often does your brother train? The short answers repeat the auxiliary and then give a frequency word or a time expression: Yes, I do. — Twice a month. — Never, I'm afraid. You can also use How many times...? in the same way, and How long...? when you want to know the duration of an activity, as in How long do you stay at the club?

It is important to remember that does already carries the third person ending, so the main verb loses its -s: not Does he plays, but Does he play. In the negative form the same rule applies: I don't often go to the cinema, and she doesn't often work in the evening. Common answer patterns are every day, once or twice a week, three times a month, on weekdays, at weekends, hardly ever and never.

Comparing Routines and Describing Free Time

When two people or two periods of time are compared, English normally puts the short adjective first and adds the comparative ending: His room is bigger than mine. She is busier than her brother on weekdays. A useful way to structure a comparison is a short sentence that contains a subject, a form of be, the adjective and than: Our school day is shorter than the school day in bigger towns. When you compare lengths of time, the comparative forms long and short are very handy: It takes me ten minutes to walk to school, and it takes my cousin twenty minutes to get there by bus.

Describing what people do in their free time at this level means naming the activity, the frequency, the place and the time. A complete answer usually contains at least three of these four pieces of information. For example: I usually play basketball with my classmates on Wednesday afternoons at the sports hall. The verb is in the present simple, the frequency adverb is in its correct position, the day takes the preposition on, and the place comes last with at.

Sample Question and Solution

Complete the short text with the correct forms. My brother ___ (usually / get) up at six, but this week he ___ (get) up at half past five. He never ___ (drink) tea in the evening, and he ___ (be) always tired after football practice. How often ___ he ___ (play) football?

The first gap needs the base form because usually points to a routine and the subject is not the third person. The second gap describes a temporary change, so the continuous is required. The third gap follows never, and with the subject he the verb takes the -s ending. In the fourth gap the adverb always follows the auxiliary. The last part is a frequency question, so it needs How often, does and the base form of play. The completed text therefore reads: My brother usually gets up at six, but this week he is getting up at half past five. He never drinks tea in the evening, and he is always tired after football practice. How often does he play football?

Common Mistakes

Most errors in this area come from three habits: ignoring the position rule, forgetting the third person ending, and mixing the two present tenses.

Summary

Adverbs of frequency show how often something happens, and they keep a fixed order: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never. They stand after the verb be and before any other main verb. The present simple is the tense of habits and activities, and the third person singular takes -s or -es; the present continuous is used for what is happening now and for temporary changes. How often...? is the standard frequency question, it takes do or does, and the main verb returns to its base form after does. Mastering these three points is enough to describe any daily routine, to answer frequency questions and to compare two habits with confidence.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar

Putting the adverb after the main verb: the pattern drinks always tea is wrong; the frequency adverb stands before the main verb, so the sentence must read She always drinks tea.

Forgetting the third person -s ending: after a frequency adverb the verb still needs its ending, so He often play football must become He often plays football.

Leaving the -s on the verb after does: the pattern Does he watches is incorrect because does already carries the third person ending, so the question must be Does he watch TV?

Confusing usually with always: always means every single time, while usually means very often but not every time, so the adverb must match what the text really says.

Using rarely with an extra negative word: rarely and never are negative in meaning on their own, so a second negative helper in the same clause is not used in English.

Choosing the continuous form for a repeated action: a sentence with every day or usually describes a habit, so the present simple is required even when a place is mentioned as well.
