What Are School Routines?
Every school day is built from a fixed order of steps and these repeated steps are called routines. In Turkish we say günlük rutinler for them. A pupil who knows the routines of a school feels safe, because she always knows what to do and when to do it. The most common school routines are arrival (coming to the school building), the register (the list of pupils), the assembly (a meeting for the whole school), the break (a short rest), lunch (the midday meal), clubs (after-school groups) and going home (leaving the school). A good pupil learns both the names of these steps and the order of them.
| Routine | Turkish | Typical sentence |
|---|
| arrival | okula geliş | We arrive at school at eight. |
| register | yoklama | The class monitor takes the register. |
| assembly | toplantı | The assembly starts at nine. |
| break | mola | We have a break at half past ten. |
| lunch | öğle yemeği | We have lunch at one o'clock. |
| clubs | kulüpler | She is in the chess club. |
| going home | eve gidiş | We go home at four. |
The Order of a School Day
Routines are not random events. They always come in the same order, and English has small words that show this order. First gives the opening step, then the next one, after that a later step, after lunch a step of the second half of the day, and finally always closes the list. A pupil who says Finally we go home shows that this is the last step. Words such as before and after are also very useful: We have our break before lunch means that the rest comes first.
To speak about the order, we use the simple present because the same steps are repeated every day. A whole school morning can be told in four short sentences: First we arrive at school. Then the register is taken. After that we have our lessons. Finally we go home.
Simple Present for Routines
A routine happens again and again, so the verb takes the simple present. The basic pattern is subject + verb. With I, you, we, they the verb stays plain: They arrive at eight. With he, she, it or one single person the verb takes -s or -es: He arrives at eight. The bell rings at eight. In a question we first use the auxiliary do or does and the verb becomes plain again: When do you arrive? Does the bell ring at eight? In a negative sentence the auxiliary carries the idea of negation: We do not run in the corridor.
Times and Places: at, in and on
English uses different prepositions for different places and times, and school routines need all three. at is used for a clock time (at half past ten) and for a point (at the school gate). in is used for a closed space (in the classroom, in the library) and for parts of the day (in the morning). on is used for a surface (on the desk), for a day (on Monday) and for transport (on the school bus). A very common school question is What time do we have lunch? and the answer is At one o'clock.
Asking, Answering and Saying No
A school day also has rules, and English has special words for them. must and must not are very strong: Pupils must not run in the corridor. should and should not give advice: You should do your homework at the weekend. can is used for permission: Can I go out, please? and can't is used when permission is not possible: We can't run in the hall. All of these words are followed by the plain verb, and none of them takes an to after it. There is also polite classroom language such as Could you open your book, please?
Step by Step: Writing About a School Day
A short text about school routines is written in four steps. Step one: choose the subject, for example we or the pupils. Step two: use the simple present and do not forget the -s ending for one person. Step three: add the time or the place with the correct preposition. Step four: join the sentences with first, then, after that, finally.
- Write the first step: We arrive at school at eight o'clock.
- Add the next step and the auxiliary if you ask a question: Then the register is taken. Do we have four lessons on Friday?
- Add times and places carefully: We have our break at half past ten and we have lunch in the canteen at one.
- Close the text with the last step: Finally we go home at four o'clock.
Common Mistakes
- at yerine in yazmak: saat bildiren cümlede daima at kullanılır, We arrive in eight o'clock yanlıştır.
- Yoklamayı register yerine record ile anlatmak: öğrenci listesinin adı the registerdır.
- must not yapısında fiilden sonra to getirmek: doğru biçim Pupils must not run, yanlış biçim Pupils must not to run.
- Soru cümlesinde fiili çekmek: Does the bell rings yerine Does the bell ring yazılır.
- assembly ile break sözcüklerini karıştırmak: assembly bütün okulun toplandığı toplantı, break ise kısa moladır.
- Sıralama bağlacını sondan önce koymak: finally her zaman listenin en sonunda bulunur.
Summary and Test Yourself
Okul rutinleri bir günün belirli adımlarıdır ve simple present ile anlatılır. Üçüncü tekil özneye -s eki gelir, sorularda do / does yardımcı fiili kullanılır ve fiil yalın kalır. Saatlerde at, kapalı yerlerde in, yüzeylerde ve gün adlarında on kullanılır. Kurallar must ve must not, tavsiyeler should, izinler can ile bildirilir. Sıralama first, then, after that, finally bağlaçlarıyla yapılır. Kendinizi deneyin: (1) Bir öğrenci İngilizce metinde assembly kelimesini gördüğünde ne anlar? (2) Do you have a break at ten? sorusuna olumlu ve olumsuz yanıt yazın. (3) We must not run cümlesindeki must not ifadesinin yerine should not yazılırsa anlam değişir mi, açıklayın. (4) Aşağıdaki günün adımlarını sıralayın: clubs, register, lunch, break, assembly, arrival.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Saatte in kullanmak: Saat bildiren cümlede daima at edatı gelir; We arrive in eight o'clock yanlış, We arrive at eight o'clock doğrudur.
Does'tan sonra fiili çekmek: Soru cümlesinde does yardımcı fiildir ve asıl fiil yalın kalır; Does the bell rings yerine Does the bell ring yazılır.
Must not'tan sonra to getirmek: Modal fiillerden sonra yalın fiil gelir; must not to run değil, must not run kullanılır.
Assembly ile break'i karıştırmak: Assembly bütün okulun toplandığı toplantıdır, break ise ders arası verilen kısa moladır.
Register'i yanlış çevirmek: Yoklama listesi register olarak adlandırılır; bu sözcüğü record ya da list yerine register ile öğrenmek gerekir.
Finally'i başa koymak: Sıralama bağlaçlarında finally daima en sonda bulunur ve bir adımı bitirir.
