Food and Food Culture from Different Parts of the World

İngilizce · 10. Sınıf · LIFE IN THE WORLD & CULTURE

Bu fark bir nezaketsizlik değil, bölgesel bir alışkanlıktır ve it is normal to eat with your hands in some countries biçiminde bir cümleyle aktarılabilir.

Yemekleri karşılaştırmak

İki yemek arasında karşılaştırma yaparken prefer A to B ya da like A more than B kalıpları kullanılır. Sebep bildirmek için because, zıtlık kurmak için while veya however, zaman bildirmek için usually, often, sometimes gibi sıklık belirteçleri işe yarar. Örneğin Turkish breakfast is usually rich, while some Asian breakfasts are lighter. cümlesinde hem karşılaştırma hem de ölçülü bir genelleme vardır.

İleri örnek — Örnek çözüm

Bir öğrenci İtalyan mutfağını tanıtırken şu cümleyi kurmuştur: In Italy people eat pasta every day, and everyone eats with a fork. Düzeltilmiş cümle şöyle olur: In Italy pasta is often eaten for dinner, and people usually use a fork, although some meals are shared with fingers.

In this lesson you will learn to describe food from different parts of the world. You will study the words for regional cuisines and typical dishes — cuisine, dish, recipe, ingredient, delicacy — and the names of well-known foods: mantı, pide, döner, baklava, pasta, pizza, sushi, curry, noodles, dim sum, tacos, hummus, falafel, kebab.

You will learn the four meal words and their timing: breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, and you will learn that meal times differ between countries.

You will also learn the language of table manners and sharing: it is normal to eat with your hands in some countries, dishes are shared in the middle of the table, and you will use frequency words such as often, usually, in many families so that your generalisations stay accurate.

Ön Bilgi

You need three things ready.

First, the present simple for general truths about culture: People in Italy often eat pasta for dinner.

Second, the passive voice, because food is usually described as something that is eaten, prepared or served rather than as something that acts: Pasta is often eaten for dinner, Dishes are shared in the middle of the table.

Third, frequency adverbs — always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never — which go before the main verb. Without them, a statement about a whole country becomes an absolute claim, and that is both inaccurate and marked down.

Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam

Read this short text about food culture and notice the measured language.

Food culture changes from region to region. In Turkey, tea is part of every conversation, and breakfast is usually a shared meal. In Italy pasta is often eaten for dinner, and people usually use a fork. In many Asian countries dishes are placed in the middle of the table and everybody takes a portion.

Three hedges keep the text accurate: usually, often and in many. None of the sentences claims that everyone in a country behaves in one single way.

Now write five sentences about the food culture of your own family using two frequency adverbs.

Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek

Follow these steps to describe a food culture.

  1. Step 1 — Name the cuisine or the dish. Turkish cuisine includes soups, grilled meat and many kinds of pastry. Food names are written in lower case unless they start a sentence: pizza, sushi, hummus.
  2. Step 2 — Say when the meal happens. Breakfast is usually eaten early, dinner is often late in Mediterranean countries.
  3. Step 3 — Describe the habit in the passive where the food is the subject. Bread is served with most meals. · Spices are used lightly in some regions.
  4. Step 4 — Use a frequency adverb before the main verb. People often share dishes. · Families usually eat together.
  5. Step 5 — Compare two cultures with while or however. Turkish breakfast is usually rich, while some Asian breakfasts are lighter.
  6. Step 6 — Add a respectful closing comment. Different habits are not strange; they are simply different.
