En sık kullanılanlar a kilo of, a litre of, a bottle of, a packet of, a can of, a slice of, a bunch of ve a glass of biçimindedir. Bu yapı sayılamayan ismi ölçülebilir bir nesneye dönüştürür ve hem anlamı hem de dilbilgisi açısından güvenli bir çözüm sunar.
- a kilo of rice → ölçü: bir kilo pirinç
- two kilos of rice → miktar sayıyla verilmiştir, bu yüzden çoğul biçim kullanılır.
- a slice of bread → ince dilim; a bunch of parsley → demet hâlinde ot.
- a can of beans → konserve; a bottle of olive oil → şişe.
| Container word | Typical use | Example |
|---|
| a kilo of | un, meyve, sebze | I'd like a kilo of tomatoes, please. |
| a litre of | sıvılar | Two litres of milk, please. |
| a bottle of | yağ, su, sos | A bottle of olive oil. |
| a packet of | pirinç, un, bisküvi | A packet of rice. |
| a can of | konserve, gazlı içecek | A can of tomato soup. |
| a slice of | ekmek, peynir, domates | Two slices of cheese. |
| a bunch of | maydanoz, soğan | A bunch of spring onions. |
Tabloyu kullanırken sayının nereye yazılacağına dikkat etmek gerekir. a litre of tekildir ve a ya da bir sayıdan sonra gelir; litres hâlinde çoğul yalnızca birden fazla birimden söz edildiğinde kullanılır: two litres of milk.
Sayılabilen ve sayılamayan yiyecekler
Alışveriş listesi yazarken en sık yapılan hata, sayılamayan bir isme doğrudan sayı eklemektir. three milks yerine three litres of milk, two breads yerine two loaves of bread ya da two slices of bread denmelidir. Buna karşılık two eggs ve three tomatoes doğrudur, çünkü bu sözcükler sayılabilir.
| Countable | Uncountable |
|---|
| an egg, two eggs | some bread, a little cheese |
| three tomatoes | some rice, two kilos of rice |
| a potato, four onions | some butter, a bottle of milk |
Sorularda How much sayılamayan, How many ise sayılabilen çoğul isimlerle kullanılır. How much rice do we need? doğruyken How many rice? yanlıştır; How many eggs? doğruyken How much eggs? yanlıştır.
Tercih ve istek ifadeleri
Alışverişte nazik bir istek I'd like..., please kalıbıyla kurulur. Karşılaştırmalı bir tercih için I prefer A to B yapısı kullanılır: I prefer tea to coffee. Olumsuzluk ve beğenmemek için I don't like... ya da I don't eat / I don't drink... biçimleri işe yarar. Bazı özel durumlarda I'd rather... than... daha güçlü bir tercih bildirir.
Cümlesi şöyle kurulabilir: I'd like a kilo of tomatoes, a packet of rice and a bottle of olive oil, please. İlk fiilde a kilo of ölçü birimi, ikinci fiilde a packet of kap birimi, üçüncü fiilde a bottle of kap birimi kullanılmıştır. Rice ve olive oil sayılamayan isimler olduğu için doğrudan sayı almamışlar, ölçü ve kap birimleriyle miktarlandırılmışlardır. Aynı alışverişte tatlıya ihtiyaç duyulmadığını söylemek için I don't like sweet food, thank you. cümlesi kullanılabilir.
Özet
Gıda alışverişinde yiyecek adlarının yanında a kilo of, a litre of, a bottle of, a packet of, a can of, a slice of, a bunch of gibi kap ve ölçü birimleri kullanılır. Bu birimler sayılamayan yiyecekleri ölçülebilir hâle getirir; bu yüzden a rice yerine a kilo of rice denir. How much sayılamayan, How many sayılabilen çoğul isimlerle gelir. İstek bildirmek için I'd like, karşılaştırmalı tercih için prefer A to B, olumsuzluk için I don't like kullanılır.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
- Sayılamayan isimleri doğrudan çoğul yapmak. Doğrusu two litres of milk biçimidir.
- Ölçü birimi kullanmayıp a rice ya da three breads demek. Ekmek için a loaf of bread denmelidir.
- Sayılamayan isimlerle How many sormak. Doğru soru How much rice do you need? olur.
- Kıyas cümlesinde prefer... than kullanmak. Doğru yapı prefer tea to coffee biçimidir.
- I'd like fiilinden sonra fiilin kendisini getirmek. Doğrusu I'd like some bread olur.
- Alışveriş ödevlerinde marka adı yazmak. Doğru ve tarafsız yaklaşım ürünün cinsini belirtmektir: a packet of cheese.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn to do food shopping in English. You will study the names of basic foods — bread, cheese, butter, milk, eggs, rice, pasta, salad, soup, chicken, fish, meat, vegetables, fruit — and you will separate the countable ones (an egg, two eggs, three tomatoes) from the uncountable ones (bread, rice, milk, cheese).
You will learn the container and measure words that make uncountable foods countable: a kilo of, a litre of, a bottle of, a packet of, a can of, a slice of, a bunch of, a glass of, a loaf of. With them you can say exactly how much you want.
You will also learn to express a preference and a refusal politely: I'd like some bread, please, I prefer tea to coffee, I don't eat meat, I'm allergic to nuts, and you will learn the dietary words vegetarian, vegan and lactose-free.
Ön Bilgi
You need three things ready.
First, countable and uncountable nouns. Uncountable foods take no plural -s and no article of their own; to count them you need a measure word.
Second, How much and How many. How much goes with uncountable nouns and with price; How many goes with countable plurals.
Third, would like for polite requests. In a shop this is the standard form: I'd like a kilo of tomatoes, please. A direct Give me... sounds rude.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this shopping note and notice the measure words.
For tonight's dinner I need a kilo of tomatoes, a packet of rice, a bottle of olive oil and a bunch of parsley. I also need two litres of milk and a loaf of bread. There isn't any cheese left, so I'd like some of that too. I don't eat meat, so please don't buy chicken.
Every uncountable food is expressed through a container: a kilo of rice, a bottle of oil, a loaf of bread. The countable ones take a number directly: two litres of milk.
Now write your own six-item shopping list, using at least four different measure words.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Follow these steps to order food correctly.
- Step 1 — Decide whether the food is countable. Tomatoes are countable; rice is not.
- Step 2 — Add the number or the measure word. Countable: three tomatoes. Uncountable: a kilo of rice, a bottle of oil.
- Step 3 — Use please and I'd like. I'd like two kilos of tomatoes, please. Note that with numbers over one, the measure word takes the plural: two litres, three kilos.
- Step 4 — Say what you do not want with don't. I don't eat meat. · I don't drink milk.
- Step 5 — State a preference or an allergy. I prefer brown bread to white bread. · I'm allergic to nuts.
- Step 6 — Ask about the price. How much is a kilo of tomatoes? Never How many is it?
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
Measure words are the key to shopping correctly.
| Measure word | Typical use | Example |
|---|
| a kilo of | flour, fruit, vegetables, meat | a kilo of tomatoes |
| a litre of | liquids | two litres of milk |
| a bottle of | oil, water, sauce, drinks | a bottle of olive oil |
| a packet of | rice, flour, biscuits | a packet of rice |
| a can of | tinned food, fizzy drinks | a can of tomato soup |
| a slice of | bread, cheese, tomato | two slices of cheese |
| a bunch of | herbs, small vegetables | a bunch of parsley |
| a loaf of | bread | a loaf of bread |
| a glass of | drinks | a glass of water |
Careful: the number goes before the measure word, and only the measure word becomes plural: two kilos of rice, not two kilo of rices.
Kendini Dene
Answer in full sentences and then check the key.
- Complete: I'd like two ____ of milk, please. (litre / litres / liting)
- Which sentence is correct? (a) How many rice do we need? (b) How much rice do we need? (c) How much eggs do we need?
- Rewrite correctly: I'd like three breads and two milk, please.
- Fill in: I prefer brown bread ____ white bread. (than / to / from)
- What do you call the person who eats no animal products at all?
- Write a six-line shopping dialogue. Use three different measure words, one How much question about price and one preference with prefer.
Answer key: 1) litres — with a number over one the measure word becomes plural. 2) (b) — rice is uncountable, so it takes how much. 3) I'd like three loaves of bread and two bottles of milk, please. 4) to — the pattern is prefer A to B. 5) a vegan. 6) Any correct dialogue, e.g. I'd like a kilo of tomatoes, please. Anything else? Yes, a bottle of olive oil and a loaf of bread. How much is a kilo of tomatoes? It is fifteen lira. I prefer ripe tomatoes to hard ones, please. Here you are, these are perfect.
