Reading: Modern Heroes Around Us
Not all heroes wear capes. Some of them wear white coats, and some simply help their neighbours. Doctors and nurses who worked day and night during the pandemic are real heroes. Teachers who inspire their students, volunteers who plant trees, and scientists who search for cures are also modern heroes. What makes them special is not fame but courage and kindness. Many of them have been working for years without expecting anything in return. They have made a difference in people's lives, and they deserve our respect. Perhaps the most important lesson is that anyone — including you — can become a hero by helping others.
Talking about Role Models
Kahraman ve rol modeller anlatılırken present simple ile kalıcı özellikler, past simple ile hayat olayları anlatılır: She is a doctor who helps poor people. She studied medicine in the 1990s.
Kişiyi değerli kılan nedenler because ve relative clauses ile açıklanır: He is admired because he never gives up.
In this lesson you will learn to describe the people who make a difference in ordinary life. You will study the vocabulary of admiration — hero, role model, volunteer, courage, selfless, dedicated, contribution, charity, recognise — and the verbs that go with it: inspire, help, raise money, make a difference, deserve respect.
You will learn how to build a description around a person using two structures you already know: the present simple for lasting qualities (She is a doctor who helps people in need) and the present perfect for achievements that still matter (They have raised a lot of money).
You will also learn to explain why someone is admired, using because, thanks to and a relative clause with who. A description that only lists facts cannot earn full marks; a description that gives reasons can.
Ön Bilgi
You need three things before the lesson.
First, the present simple and past simple. Lasting qualities take the present simple; events in a person's life take the past simple (She studied medicine in the 1990s).
Second, the present perfect, because achievements that still matter today are expressed with it: He has helped hundreds of families since 2010.
Third, the relative clause with who. Since the whole topic is about people, who clauses appear in almost every sentence you write, and confusing who with which is the most common error.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short description of a role model.
My role model is my aunt, who works as a nurse in a small hospital. She is calm, patient and always willing to help. She has worked night shifts for more than fifteen years, and she has never complained. What I admire most is that she treats every patient with respect. Thanks to her, many people recovered faster than the doctors expected.
The text does four things: names the person and job with a who clause, gives three character adjectives, gives one achievement with the present perfect, and explains the effect with thanks to.
Now write four sentences about someone you admire, using the same four moves.
İleri Örnek
Compare a simple description with an evaluative one.
Simple: My teacher is kind. She helps students after lessons. She is also very patient.
Evaluative: My teacher is the kind of person who stays after lessons without being asked. What makes her special is not her knowledge alone but the patience she shows with students who find the subject difficult. She has helped our class improve more than any other teacher, and that is why she deserves the award.
The second version explains the quality instead of naming it and ends with a judgement. In exam writing, replace every bare adjective with a short example: not kind but kind because she stays after lessons.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Follow these steps to describe a modern hero.
- Step 1 — Name the person and their role. My neighbour, who is a volunteer firefighter, helps people at night.
- Step 2 — Give two or three character adjectives. brave, selfless, dedicated, generous, determined. Choose adjectives you can support with an example.
- Step 3 — Give one achievement with the present perfect. He has saved several families from fires.
- Step 4 — Explain the effect with thanks to or because of. Thanks to his training, the accident had a happy ending.
- Step 5 — Finish with a general lesson. Anyone can make a difference if they are willing to help. This closing idea is what the topic is really about.
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
The adjectives used for heroes are often confused. This table separates them.
| Adjective | Meaning | Typical noun it describes |
|---|
| brave / courageous | not afraid in danger | firefighter, soldier, rescuer |
| selfless | thinking of others first | volunteer, nurse, parent |
| dedicated | giving a lot of effort over time | teacher, scientist, doctor |
| generous | giving freely | donor, neighbour |
| determined | not giving up | athlete, activist, student |
| reliable | can be trusted | colleague, friend |
| modest | not showing off | leader, scientist |
| inspiring | making others want to act | speaker, role model |

Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Six mistakes appear regularly in this topic.
- Using which for a person. My mother which is a doctor should be My mother, who is a doctor.
- Confusing who and whose. The man who car was stolen is wrong; write The man whose car was stolen.
- Writing inspired when you mean inspiring. She is an inspired teacher suggests she feels inspired; an inspiring teacher means she inspires others.
- Using make a difference with the wrong preposition. Say make a difference to people's lives, not make a difference on people's lives.
- Saying raise money for charity in the wrong form. The verb raise takes the object money: They raised money for a children's charity. Do not write They rised money; the past is raised.
- Confusing role model and role. A role model is a person; a role is a part someone plays.
