Zaman İfadeleri

Present Perfect: Experience or Duration?

Present perfect (have/has + V3) geçmişle bugünü bağlar: belirli zaman yoktur (I have visited Cappadocia twice) veya süre devam ediyordur (We have lived here for ten years). For süre, since ise başlangıç noktası için kullanılır.

Present perfect continuous (have/has been + V-ing) eylemin başlayıp sürdüğünü vurgular: I have been waiting for an hour. Sonucu önemliyse normal present perfect, süre ve devamlılık önemliyse continuous tercih edilir.

Ever, never, just, yet, already bu tensin klasik yardımcılarıdır: Have you ever tried it? — No, never. — I have just finished it. Soru kurulumunda yardımcı fiil öne gelir: Has she already left?

Geçmişte bitmiş ve bugünlük bağ kurmayan olaylarda (yesterday, in 2010) present perfect kullanılmaz; burada past simple gerekir. Bu ayrım sınavların en sık sorulan konusudur.

Present Perfect ve Present Perfect Continuous Arasındaki Temel Farklar

Present Perfect ve Present Perfect Continuous, geçmişte başlanan eylemlerin günümüzdeki etkisini ifade eden iki zaman ifadesidir. Bu zamanlar, geçmiş ve günümüz arasında bağ kurar ve herhangi bir belirli zaman noktasını vurgular. Örneğin, 'I have written three books' ifadesi, geçmişte bitmiş eylemleri vurgularken, 'I have been writing a book' ifadesi ise eylemin süresini ve devam ettiğini gösterir. Bu fark, öğrencilerin zaman ifadelerini doğru kullanmalarında kritik öneme sahiptir.

Present Perfect, eylemin sonucunu vurgularken, Present Perfect Continuous ise eylemin süresini ve devam ettiğini vurgular. Bu nedenle, 'She has donated a lot of money' ifadesi, eylemin sonucunu vurgularken, 'She has been donating to charity for years' ifadesi ise eylemin süresini vurgular. Bu iki zaman ifadesi, öğrencilerin günlük hayatta karşılaştıkları durumlarda doğru ifade edebilmelerini sağlar. Ayrıca, bu zamanlarla ilgili olarak, 'for', 'since', 'recently' gibi zaman ifadeleri kullanılırken dikkat edilmesi gereken noktalardır.

Ne Öğreneceğiz

In this lesson you will learn two tenses that connect the past with the present. The present perfect (have / has + past participle) focuses on the result of an action; the present perfect continuous (have / has been + -ing) focuses on the activity and its duration.

You will study the time words that belong to each: for, since, recently, lately, so far, already, yet, just, ever, never. For is followed by a period (for five years) and since by a starting point (since 2020).

You will learn to choose between the two by asking a question: is the important thing the finished result (present perfect) or the continuing activity and how long it has lasted (present perfect continuous)? You will also see that verbs describing states (know, like, believe, be) normally use the present perfect, not the continuous.

Ön Bilgi

You need three things ready.

First, the past participle, because the present perfect is built from it. Errors here break the sentence: I have gone, not I have went.

Second, the difference between present perfect and past simple. If the time is finished (yesterday, in 2019, last week), the past simple is required. If the time is open or not mentioned, the present perfect is required.

Third, the -ing form and its spelling rules (run → running, write → writing, sit → sitting), because the continuous form needs them, and a spelling mistake in the participle or the -ing form loses marks even when the grammar choice is right.

Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam

Read this text and notice how the two tenses divide the work.

I have written three letters this morning, but I haven't finished the report yet. My sister has been working on her project since eight o'clock, and she still has two pages to write. We have already had lunch, so we do not need to stop.

Have written reports a finished result (three letters). Has been working reports an activity in progress with its starting point (since eight o'clock). Have already had uses already with the result.

Now write two sentences of your own: one with a result and one with a continuing activity.

İleri Örnek

Compare the same situation described in the two tenses.

Result: She has read fifty pages this week, so she can answer the questions.

Activity: She has been reading since she came home, and she has not stopped once.

The first sentence could be true even if she read the pages in three short sessions and is now resting. The second says she has been reading continuously. In the exam, look for a clue word: all day, since, for two hours point to the continuous; a number of completed items (fifty pages, three letters, two books) points to the present perfect.

Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek

Follow these steps to choose the right form.

  1. Step 1 — Look for a time expression. since + starting point and for + period both allow either tense; a finished time (yesterday) allows only the past simple.
  2. Step 2 — Ask what the sentence emphasises. A number of completed things (three emails) → present perfect. How long something has been going on (all morning) → present perfect continuous.
  3. Step 3 — Check the verb type. State verbs such as know, like, want, believe, belong are not normally used in the continuous: I have known her for years, not I have been knowing her.
  4. Step 4 — Build the form correctly. Present perfect: have / has + V3. Present perfect continuous: have / has been + V-ing.
  5. Step 5 — Place the adverbs. Already before the participle; yet at the end; just before the participle; ever and never between the auxiliary and the participle.
