Reading: Responsible Use of Technology
The internet offers amazing opportunities, but it also brings risks. A good digital citizen knows how to stay safe online. First, never share your address, phone number or password with strangers. Secondly, be kind: cyberbullying hurts people just like face-to-face bullying. Thirdly, check whether the news you read is true before you share it. Spending too much time online can also harm your health and your studies, so take regular breaks and do a digital detox. Technology is neither good nor bad; it depends on how we use it. If we all act responsibly, the digital world can be a better place.
Digital Citizenship: Language of Responsibility
Dijital yurttaşlık metinleri çoğunlukla should ve must ile yazılmış kurallar içerir: We should not share our passwords and we must respect other people's opinions.
However ve although ile sorunlar, so ve therefore ile çözümler bağlanır. Kaynak kullanımı, gizlilik ve nezaket kavramları bu tür metinlerde sıkça geçer; bu yüzden sorular çoğunlukla kural ve gerekçe eşleştirmesi ister.
Dijital Sorumluluk Metinlerinin Yapısı
Dijital vatandaşlık metinleri dört adımda kurulur: sorun → neden → sonuç → çözüm. Örneğin Fake news spreads quickly on social media, so we should check the source before we share it. cümlesi dört adımı da içerir. Bağlaçlar bu yapıyı görünür kılar: neden için because, sonuç için so / therefore, zıtlık için however / although.
Kural bildiren cümlelerde modal seçimi önemlidir: should öneri, mustn't yasak bildirir. We should not share our passwords with anyone. yumuşak bir öneri iken You mustn't post other people's photos without permission. kesin bir yasaktır.
Yazma sorularında denge aranır: olumlu ve olumsuz yönler birlikte sunulur, ardından tek bir çözüm önerisi getirilir. On the one hand... on the other hand... kalıbı bu dengeyi kurar; kapanış cümlesi ise In conclusion, we should use technology responsibly. gibi bir öneride bulunur.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn how to behave safely and respectfully online, and how to write about it. You will study the vocabulary of digital responsibility — privacy, cyberbullying, screen time, digital detox, addiction, fake news, identity theft, awareness, permission — and the verbs that go with them: protect, verify, report, block, share, respect.
You will learn the rules of online behaviour expressed with modals: should for advice, must for a firm rule, mustn't for a prohibition and don't have to for something optional.
You will also learn the four-part structure of a responsibility text — problem, cause, result, solution — and the connectors that make it visible: because, so, therefore, however, although, and the balanced frame on the one hand... on the other hand....
Ön Bilgi
You need three things before this lesson.
First, the modals of advice and obligation, because every rule sentence in this topic uses one. Without them you cannot express the difference between a suggestion and a ban.
Second, the gerund as a subject: Sharing photos without permission is wrong. Responsibility texts often start a sentence with an -ing form, and you need to treat it as a singular subject (is, not are).
Third, the infinitive of purpose: We should check the source to avoid sharing fake news. This is how you explain why a rule exists, which is exactly what the exam asks when it says give a reason.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short class-rule text.
A good digital citizen protects personal information and respects other people's opinions. You should choose a strong password and you should not share it with anyone, even with a close friend. You mustn't post someone else's photo without permission. If you see fake news, verify the source before you share it. Remember that everything you post stays online, so think before you write.
The text mixes advice (should, should not) and prohibition (mustn't), and it explains the reason with because and so. That mixture is what a well-written responsibility text looks like.
Now write four rules for your school's computer club, using should and mustn't.
İleri Örnek
Compare a short list of rules with a balanced discussion text.
List: Protect your password. Don't share fake news. Be kind online.
Balanced: Social media has clear benefits: it keeps friends in touch and spreads information quickly. On the other hand, it can expose users to cyberbullying and to false news. Therefore, users should verify information before sharing it, and they should report harmful content immediately. Although some people believe that the internet cannot be controlled, simple personal habits can reduce most of the risks.
The second text keeps both sides and then gives one clear recommendation. In exam writing, a text that lists only negative points scores lower because it shows no judgement.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Follow these four steps to write a responsibility text.
- Step 1 — State the problem. Fake news spreads quickly on social media. No solution yet.
- Step 2 — Give the cause with because. This happens because people share posts without checking them.
- Step 3 — Give the result with so or therefore. As a result, wrong information reaches thousands of people.
- Step 4 — Give the solution with a modal. We should check the source and verify the date before we share anything. For a firm rule, use must; for a ban, use mustn't.
- Step 5 — Close with a balanced sentence. Although the internet has risks, responsible users can make it a safer place.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Six mistakes appear regularly in this topic.
- Making news, information or privacy plural. Write fake news is, the information is, never fake news are or informations.
- Confusing mustn't and don't have to. You mustn't share the photo forbids it; You don't have to share the photo means it is your choice.
- Using the passive without be. The video reported by a student is not a sentence; write The video was reported by a student.
- Writing in the social media. Say on social media.
- Starting a sentence with an -ing form and then using a plural verb. Sharing false news are harmful should be Sharing false news is harmful, because the -ing form is a singular subject.
- Confusing permission and permit. Permission is the noun (ask for permission); permit is the verb (schools do not permit phones).
