Modals of Obligation — Zorunluluk Kipleri

Zorunluluk, gereklilik ve yasak bildiren yapılar anlam bakımından güç sıralamasına sahiptir. Özellikle mustn't ve don't have to sık karıştırılır.

YapıAnlamÖrnek
mustGüçlü kişisel zorunlulukI must finish this project.
have toDışsal kural/zorunlulukStudents have to wear uniforms.
mustn'tYasakYou mustn't park here.
don't have toGerekli değilYou don't have to pay.
shouldTavsiye (zorunlu değil)You should eat vegetables.
had betterUyarıYou'd better not be late.
Zorunluluk Gücü / Strength of Obligation should have to must mustn't (yasak) zayıf öneri kesin yasak Şekil 6.1: should'dan mustn't'a doğru zorunluluk gücü artar.

Tavsiye mi, Zorunluluk mu?

Should kişisel bir tavsiye verir; dinleyen uymayabilir: You should study more. Must ise konuşanın dayattığı güçlü bir zorunluluktur: You must finish it today.

Have to, dış kurallar ve koşullar nedeniyle gerekliliği bildirir: I have to wear a uniform at work. Emir kuvveti must > have to > should biçiminde azalır. Dikkat: mustn't yasaklama, don't have to ise zorunluluk olmadığının ifadesidir.

Geçmiş, Gelecek ve Soru Kalıpları

Zorunluluk ifadelerinin geçmişte ve gelecekteki biçimleri ayrı ezberlenir. Geçmişte kalan zorunluluk için had to kullanılır: I had to wake up at five o'clock.; geçmişte zorunlu olmayan durum ise We didn't have to pay for the tickets. ile anlatılır. Must fiilinin geçmiş biçimi yoktur, yerine daima had to gelir.

Gelecek zorunluluklar will have to ile kurulur: You will have to show your identity card at the gate. Soru ve olumsuzlukta yardımcı fiil değişir: Do I have to come tomorrow? ve You don't have to wait. Burada must ile kurulan soru nadirdir ve sınavda have to tercih edilir.

Aralarındaki farkı netleştirmek için üç örnek yan yana ezberlenir: You should eat vegetables. (tavsiye), You have to wear a uniform. (dış kural), You must finish it today. (güçlü dayatma). Aynı durumda bu üçünün sırası değişmez.

Ayrımın Sınavdaki Hâli: Güç Sırası ve Bağlam

Kipler arasında bir güç sırası vardır: should < have to < must. Bu sıra zorunluluk derecesini gösterir; ancak mustn't bu sıranın üstünde bir kategoriye, yani yasaka aittir ve zorunluluğun güçlü hâliyle karıştırılmamalıdır.

En sık sorulan ikili şu örnekle pekiştirilir: You mustn't use your phone in the exam. cümlesi telefonu yasaklar; You don't have to come on Saturday. cümlesi ise gelmenin gerekli olmadığını, isteğe bağlı olduğunu söyler. İkisi zıt anlamlıdır ve şıklarda sıkça yer değiştirilerek sorulur.

Okul ve güvenlik kurallarında must baskındır, çünkü kuralı koyan kişi belirgindir: Students must hand in their projects on Friday. Kişisel tercih ve önerilerde ise should kullanılır. Bu ayrım, konuyu kuran temel ölçüttür.

Ne Öğreneceğiz

This lesson teaches you to express obligation, necessity and prohibition. You will study must (a strong obligation imposed by the speaker), have to (a necessity coming from an outside rule or situation), mustn't (a prohibition) and don't have to (no obligation at all).

You will learn that these four are often confused, especially mustn't and don't have to, which are opposites: You mustn't park here forbids it, while You don't have to pay says it is not necessary.

You will also learn the past and future forms: had to for past obligation, didn't have to when something was not necessary, and will have to for future obligation. Questions and negatives with obligation normally use do / does with have to, because must has no question or negative forms of its own in those uses.

Ön Bilgi

You need three things before the lesson.

First, that modals behave differently from ordinary verbs. Must does not take do / does / did in negatives and questions of obligation; instead, English switches to have to for those uses.

Second, the the past simple of have to: had to. You need it because must has no past form. If you write I musted, the sentence is wrong; write I had to.

Third, the difference between a rule and advice: should is advice the listener may ignore, while must and have to are obligations. Keeping this line clear is the point of the whole topic.

Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam

Read this short notice and look at the four modals.

All students must wear the sports kit for the tournament. You mustn't wear jewellery during the matches, because it is dangerous. You don't have to bring your own ball; the school provides one. You should arrive fifteen minutes before your first game.

Must gives the school's strong rule. Mustn't forbids jewellery. Don't have to removes an obligation. Should gives advice. Four sentences, four different meanings.

Now write a four-sentence notice for your own school library using all four patterns.

İleri Örnek

Compare the same situation described with different modals.

Personal obligation: I must finish this report tonight; I promised my teacher. (the speaker decides)

Outside rule: I have to finish the report tonight; the deadline is midnight. (the rule decides)

No obligation: I don't have to finish it tonight; the teacher extended the deadline.

Prohibition: I mustn't submit it late, or the system will reject it.

The exam tests exactly this: read the reason in the sentence. If the reason is the speaker's own decision, choose must; if it is an external rule, choose have to.

Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek

Follow these steps to choose the right modal.

  1. Step 1 — Ask whether the sentence is about advice or obligation. Advice takes should; obligation continues to the next step.
  2. Step 2 — Ask who creates the obligation. The speaker's own decision or strong feeling takes must; an external rule, law or situation takes have to.
  3. Step 3 — Check whether the sentence forbids something. A prohibition takes mustn't, never don't have to.
  4. Step 4 — Check whether it says something is unnecessary. That takes don't have to.
  5. Step 5 — If the time is past, use had to. I had to wear glasses when I was ten. For the future, use will have to: You will have to show your card.
  6. Step 6 — For questions and negatives, build them with do. Do I have to come tomorrow? / I don't have to wait.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar

Six mistakes are typical of this topic.

  • Using mustn't when you mean don't have to. You mustn't come on Saturday forbids it. If it is simply not necessary, write You don't have to come on Saturday.
  • Writing must in a past sentence. I must get up early yesterday is wrong. Use I had to get up early yesterday.
  • Building the question with must. Must I come tomorrow? is possible but formal and rare at this level; the expected form is Do I have to come tomorrow?
  • Adding to after must. I must to go is wrong; write I must go.
  • Forgetting the s in the third person with have to. She have to wear a uniform should be She has to wear a uniform.
  • Using should for a rule. Signs and rules take must or have to: Visitors must report to reception, not Visitors should report.

Özet

Obligation is about who decides and how strong the obligation is.

  • must: the speaker decides; strong. Negative mustn't means forbidden.
  • have to: an outside rule or situation requires it; negative don't have to means not necessary.
  • should: advice, which the listener may ignore.
  • had better: a warning about a bad consequence.
  • Past and future: had to, didn't have to, will have to. Must has no past form.
  • Strength order: should is weakest, then have to, then must.
