Konu Anlatımı

Ne Zaman Kullanılır?
- Tavsiye: You should drink more water.
- Görüş/beklenti: The film should be good.
- Eleştiri: You shouldn't have shouted at her. (geçmişe dair pişmanlık)

- How about / What about + V-ing? — How about taking a break?
- It's a good idea to... — It's a good idea to revise daily.
- If I were you, I would... — If I were you, I would ask the teacher.
Örnek Tavsiye Cümleleri You should get enough sleep before an exam. You ought to check your answers twice. You shouldn't study in a noisy place. Should I revise grammar or vocabulary first?
Giving Advice: should ve ought to
Should ve ought to, tavsiye vermek ve uygun olanı önermek için kullanılır: You should see a doctor. / You ought to rest more. İkisi de modal fiil olduğundan hemen ardından yalın fiil (V1) gelir.
Olumsuzları shouldn't ve oughtn't to biçimindedir; soruda modal öne gelir: Should I wait here?
Bu ikilinin ardından asla -s eki gelmez; to'lu yapıda to'nun da atlanmaması gerekir.
Ne Zaman Kullanılır? (İkili Karşılaştırma)
Should ve ought to kullanılırken, anlam ve bağlamın belirli bir duruma göre seçim yapması önemlidir. Örneğin, 'You should drink more water' ifadesi günlük hayatta daha yaygın olarak kullanılırken, 'We ought to help people in need' gibi ifadeler daha resmi ve vurgulu bir durumda yer alır.
Örneğin, 'You shouldn't have shouted at her' ifadesi geçmişteki bir hata hakkında pişmanlık ifadesi olarak kullanılırken, 'You ought to check your answers twice' ise gelecekteki bir eylem önerisi olarak işlev görür.
Örneğin, 'How about taking a break?' ifadesi, öğrencinin sınav öncesi veya ders sonrası dinlenme fırsatı bulması için tavsiye edilirken, 'It's a good idea to revise daily' ifadesi, öğrencilerin düzenli olarak dersleri tekrar etmesi için önerilir. Bu tür ifadeler, öğrencilerin öğrenme sürecini daha verimli hale getirmek amacıyla kullanılır.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn the two most common ways of giving advice in English: should and ought to. Both are followed by the base form of the verb and both mean that something is a good idea, but ought to is slightly more formal and slightly stronger.
You will study the four situations where advice is used: recommending an action (You should drink more water), giving an opinion about something expected (The film should be good), criticising a past action (You shouldn't have shouted), and pointing out a duty (We ought to help people in need).
You will also learn the softer advice patterns that often appear next to them: Why don't you...?, How about + -ing, You'd better, If I were you, I would... and It's a good idea to.... Knowing which one is a warning and which one is a gentle suggestion is what the exam tests.
Ön Bilgi
Two things must be ready.
First, the rule that modal verbs are followed by the base form. After should you never add to, and you never add -s: He should go, not He should goes or He should to go. Ought is different because it needs its own to: He ought to go.
Second, the question and negative forms of these modals. Should forms questions and negatives by itself: Should I wait? / I shouldn't worry. With ought to, the negative is usually ought not to or oughtn't to, and questions are rare and formal.
You should also be able to use the -ing form after a preposition, because How about + -ing is one of the advice patterns in this lesson.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short advice note and count the advice patterns.
Dear Mert, you shouldn't stay up so late before an exam. You ought to revise a little every evening instead of studying all night. How about joining our study group on Thursdays? If I were you, I would also talk to the teacher about the parts you find difficult. Good luck!
The note contains four patterns: shouldn't, ought to, How about + -ing and If I were you, I would. Notice that the tone stays friendly even though the advice is direct.
Now write a five-line note to a friend who is tired all the time. Use should and one other pattern.
İleri Örnek
Advice changes with the situation and with the strength you want.
Gentle suggestion: Why don't you take a short walk after dinner? It might help you sleep.
Strong warning: You'd better stop skipping breakfast, or you will feel terrible by noon.
Formal recommendation: Students ought to keep a record of the words they meet, because revision is more effective when it is organised.
The three sentences give the same general advice with different force. In the exam, the answer depends on the situation described: a friend's small problem needs the gentle form, a health risk needs You'd better, and a written report to a school usually expects should or ought to.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Follow these steps to give advice correctly.
- Step 1 — Identify the problem. I can't sleep before exams.
- Step 2 — Choose the strength. Friendly suggestion (Why don't you...?), standard advice (should), formal advice (ought to) or warning (You'd better).
- Step 3 — Use the correct verb form. After should the base form; after ought to the base form with to; after How about the -ing form.
- Step 4 — Add a reason with because. You should drink less coffee, because caffeine keeps you awake.
- Step 5 — Check the sentence has only one modal. You should can rest is impossible. One verb, one modal.
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
Advice patterns differ in strength and in the form they take.
| Pattern | Strength | Form that follows | Example |
|---|
| Why don't you...? | gentle suggestion | base form | Why don't you ask for help? |
| How about...? / What about...? | gentle suggestion | -ing form | How about taking a break? |
| should | standard advice | base form | You should rest more. |
| ought to | formal, slightly stronger advice | to + base form | You ought to see a doctor. |
| You'd better | warning, consequence implied | base form | You'd better hurry. |
| If I were you, I would... | personal advice | base form | If I were you, I would explain. |
Careful: You'd better warns about a bad result, so it is not a polite way to suggest something pleasant.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Six mistakes appear regularly with advice patterns.
- Putting to after should. You should to sleep more is wrong; write You should sleep more.
- Leaving out to after ought. You ought see a doctor should be You ought to see a doctor.
- Adding -s after a modal. She should goes and He ought to goes are wrong; the verb stays in the base form.
- Using the base form after How about. How about take a break should be How about taking a break?
- Writing If I am you. The fixed form is If I were you, followed by I would.
- Using two modals in one sentence. You should must study is impossible. Choose one.
