Konu Anlatımı
Past Continuous and Past Simple — Süreklilik ve Kırılma
Geçmişte bir eylem sürerken başka bir eylem onu bölmüştür: yemek yaparken telefon çaldı, ödev yaparken ışıklar söndü. Bu tür anlatımlar past continuous (süreklilik, arka plan) ile past simple (tek seferlik kırılma olayı) bir arada kullanılır.
Past Continuous Yapısı
Yapı, be fiilinin geçmiş çekimi ile fiilin -ing biçiminden oluşur: was / were + V-ing. Tekil özne ile was, çoğul özne ile were kullanılır: I was sleeping, he was sleeping, they were sleeping. Bu zaman o an değil, geçmişte belirli bir anda süren eylemi anlatır; bu nedenle at eight o'clock last night, all morning, at that moment gibi ifadelerle sık görünür.
| Özne | Olumlu | Olumsuz | Soru |
|---|
| I / He / She / It | was waiting | was not waiting | Was he waiting? |
| You / We / They | were waiting | were not waiting | Were they waiting? |
When ile While Arasındaki Fark
While, iki eylemin de aynı anda sürdüğünü gösterir ve çoğunlukla past continuous ile birlikte kullanılır: While I was reading, my sister was cooking. When ise tek seferlik kırılma olayını bağlar ve past simple alır: I was reading when the lights went out. Kuralı şu şekilde ezberleyin: uzun süre devam eden eylem continuous, kısa ve biten olay simple.
Dikkat: while yalnızca süreklilik, when hem süreklilik hem kırılma için kullanılabilir. Bu nedenle When he was sleeping de doğrudur; ancak sınavlarda anlam ayrımı sorulduğunda while vurgunun süreklilikte olduğunu gösterir.
Arka Plan ve Olay: Anlatı Tekniği
- Arka plan (continuous): The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
- Olay (simple): Suddenly, a strong wind blew the door shut.
- Süre ifadesi: all morning, all day, at ten o'clock, at that moment.
- Kesinti ifadesi: when, while, just as, suddenly, at that moment.
Adım Adım: Kırılma Olayını Anlatma
- Arka planı kurun: I was walking home from school.
- Kırılma olayını ekleyin: when it started to rain heavily.
- Sonucu yazın: So I ran to the nearest bus stop.
- Üç cümleyi birleştirip zaman uyumunu kontrol edin.
Olumsuz ve Soru Formları
Past continuousda olumsuzluk was / were ile birleşir: He wasn't sleeping. Soruda be fiili özne önüne geçer: What were you doing at nine? Burada do fiili de continuous alabilir: What were you doing? çünkü anlamı o an gerçekleştirilen eylemdir.
Sınav Odaklı: Zaman Uyumu Hataları
When'ten sonra past simple, ana cümlede past continuous kalıbı en sık çıkan kombinasyondur: While + past continuous, when + past simple.
Sınavlarda en çok şu tuzaklar görülür: was/were uyuşmazlığı (they was), continuous alan fiillerin V-ing'inin unutulması ve when/while'ın yeri değiştirilerek kurulan cümleler. Ayrıca past continuous, geçmişte tamamlanmış bir alışkanlığı değil, belirli bir andaki sürekliliği anlatır; her alışkanlık için bu zaman kullanılmaz.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
This lesson teaches you to tell a past story with two layers: the background and the event. You will learn the past continuous (was / were + V-ing) for actions that were in progress, and the past simple for the short event that interrupted them.
You will study the connectors that belong with each layer: while and as with the continuous background, when, just as and suddenly with the interrupting event.
You will also learn the time expressions that mark a past moment (at eight o'clock last night, all morning, at that moment) and how to form negatives and questions in the past continuous with wasn't and were.
Ön Bilgi
Three things must be in place.
First, the past simple, because the interrupting event always takes that form.
Second, the present continuous, because the past continuous follows exactly the same pattern with was or were instead of am, is or are.
Third, the difference between verbs that describe an activity and verbs that describe a short event. Verbs such as read, wait, walk, rain, sleep can last a long time, so they sound natural in the continuous. Verbs such as start, finish, break, arrive, find happen in a moment, so they usually take the past simple. This difference, not the grammar itself, is what decides which tense a sentence needs.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this paragraph and mark the two layers.
Yesterday evening I was doing my homework when the lights went out. My brother was watching a film, so he stopped it and we listened to the radio for a while. At that moment my mother was cooking dinner in the kitchen. Everything changed when the electricity came back.
The background sentences are was doing, was watching and was cooking. The short events are went out, stopped and came back. Notice that the same idea can be written in one sentence with when, or in two sentences joined by so.
Now write one sentence of your own in the pattern: I was... when...
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
The two tenses and their connectors are easy to confuse. This table separates them.
| Item | Use | Form | Example |
|---|
| past continuous | action in progress at a past moment | was / were + V-ing | At nine I was studying. |
| past simple | finished event | V2 | I finished at ten. |
| while | two long actions together | + past continuous | While I was reading, she was cooking. |
| when | the short event | + past simple | I was reading when the phone rang. |
| just as | the exact moment | + past simple | Just as I opened the door, it fell. |
| all morning / all day | period in progress | + past continuous | They were working all morning. |
| at that moment | one point inside a period | + past continuous | At that moment the bus was leaving. |
Memory hook: long action + while; short event + when.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Six errors are typical of this topic.
- Agreement error with was and were. They was sleeping should be They were sleeping; He were sleeping should be He was sleeping.
- Forgetting the -ing form. I was read and I was read a book are wrong; write I was reading.
- Using the past simple for the background. I read when the lights went out is unclear. Say I was reading when the lights went out.
- Placing when before the background. When the lights went out, I was reading is correct, but When I was reading, the lights went out changes the meaning, because when now belongs to the continuous action. Keep the event after when.
- Using the past continuous for a habit. When I was a child I was playing in the garden is wrong; a repeated past habit takes the past simple or used to.
- Double marking the tense. I was went is impossible. The auxiliary be is followed by the -ing form only.
Özet
A past story needs one tense for the background and one for the event.
- Past continuous: was / were + V-ing for actions in progress at a past moment. Signals: while, at that moment, all morning, at eight o'clock.
- Past simple: V2 for the finished event. Signals: when, just as, suddenly, then.
- Combination: the long action takes the continuous, the short event takes the simple.
- Two long actions: both take the continuous and are joined by while.
- Questions and negatives: in the continuous, move or negate was / were; do is never used.
