Konu Anlatımı
Past Simple — Geçmiş Zaman
Past simple, geçmişte başlayıp bitmiş, tamamlanmış olayları anlatır. Günlük anlatı, biyografi, gezi yazısı ve masalların temelini bu zaman kurar. Türkçedeki -di eki çoğu zaman past simple ile çevrilir: I visited my grandmother (babaannemi ziyaret ettim).
Past Simple Ne Zaman Kullanılır?
Dört temel durumda kullanılır: geçmişte belirli bir zamanda biten olay (I saw that film last night), ardışık geçmiş olaylar (He got up, had breakfast and left), geçmişteki alışkanlıklar (When I was small, I played in the garden) ve geçmişte geçen durumlar (She lived in Izmir for ten years).
|---|
| go | go | went /went/ | gitmek |
| see | see | saw /sɔː/ | görmek |
| write | write | wrote /rəʊt/ | yazmak |
| buy | buy | bought /bɔːt/ | satın almak |
| teach | teach | taught /tɔːt/ | öğretmek |
| take | take | took /tʊk/ | almak |
Olumsuz ve Soru Formu
Geçmiş zaman olumsuz ve soruda did yardımcısını kullanır. Did, geçmişin işaretini taşıdığı için fiil yalın (V1) kalır: I did not (didn't) buy a ticket. ve Did you buy a ticket? Cümlenin sonunda V2 bulunursa (didn't bought) hata işlenir.
- Olumlu: They arrived at the airport early.
- Olumsuz: They did not (didn't) arrive at the airport early.
- Soru: Did they arrive at the airport early?
- Kısa cevap: Yes, they did. / No, they didn't.
Zaman İfadeleri ve Kısa Soru Cevapları
Past simple sinyalleri üç grupta toplanır: yesterday, last night, last week, two days ago, in 2010, when I was a child. Bu ifadeler cümlenin sonunda ya da başında yer alır ve görüldüğü an zaman past simpledir. Kısa cevaplarda yardımcı fiil tekrarlanır: Did she call you? — No, she didn't. Ayrıca ardışık geçmiş olaylar bağlaçsız, fiillerin V2 biçimleriyle sıralanır.
Adım Adım: Geçmiş Anlatı Yazma
- Geçmişi bir giriş cümlesiyle açın: Last summer my family and I went to Cappadocia.
- Olayları kronolojik sırayla dizin: We woke up early, had breakfast and joined the tour.
- Her cümlenin fiilinin V2 olduğunu tek tek kontrol edin.
- Kapanış cümlesi ekleyin: It was an unforgettable trip.
Sınav Odaklı: Tipik Hatalar
Did'tan sonra V2 gelmez: Did you went? değil, Did you go? yazılır. Aynı şekilde didn't'tan sonra da yalın fiil kullanılır.
Sınavlarda en sık sorulan ayrıntılar şunlardır: -ed ekli fiillerin yazımı (planned, studied), ago kelimesinin daima süre ifadesinden sonra gelmesi (two weeks ago, değil ago two weeks) ve ago ile before arasındaki fark: ago'dan bakış noktası şimdiki andır, before'dan bakış noktası ise geçmişin kendisidir.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn the tense that carries every story, biography and diary entry: the past simple. You will study when it is used — finished events, a series of past actions, past habits and past states — and how time words such as yesterday, last night, two days ago, in 2015 signal it.
You will learn the spelling rules for regular verbs (planned, studied, carried, stopped) and you will work with a list of irregular verbs in their second form (go–went, see–saw, write–wrote, buy–bought, teach–taught, take–took).
Finally you will learn the negative and question forms built with did, and the short answers Yes, I did / No, I didn't. By the end of the lesson you should be able to write a coherent paragraph about your last holiday with all verbs in the correct form.
Ön Bilgi
You need three things before you start.
First, the present simple. The past simple is built from it: the negative and question forms work exactly like the present with do / does, only with did.
Second, the verb to be in the past: was for singular subjects and were for plural subjects. You will need it for sentences about states: The film was interesting. / The tickets were expensive.
Third, a sense of finished time. The past simple is used when the time period is over. If the action still touches the present, another tense is needed, and that comparison comes later in the year. For now, practise the rule: any finished time expression in the sentence means the past simple.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short diary entry. Every verb is in the past simple.
Last Saturday I woke up early because we travelled to the coast. We took the eight o'clock bus and we arrived before noon. My father rented a small boat and my sister swam in the sea. In the evening we ate fish at a local restaurant and bought some souvenirs. It was a wonderful day.
Read the text again and notice two things. First, the first sentence gives the time with Last Saturday. Second, the events follow each other in order, so no past continuous is needed.
Write five sentences about your last weekend. Begin each one with a time word or a time connector.
Karşılaştırma Tablosu
Regular and irregular verbs behave differently, and time words behave differently too. This table keeps them apart.
| Item | Rule | Example |
|---|
| regular verb, most cases | add -ed | work → worked, visit → visited |
| verb ending in -e | add -d only | live → lived, arrive → arrived |
| verb ending in consonant + y | y becomes i, then -ed | study → studied, carry → carried |
| short verb, vowel + one consonant | double the consonant | stop → stopped, plan → planned |
| irregular verb | learn the second form | go → went, buy → bought, teach → taught |
| negative and question | did + base form | didn't buy, Did you buy...? |
| ago | counts back from now | two weeks ago, three years ago |
| before | counts back from a past moment | I had seen him before. |
Careful: ago always follows the period it refers to: two weeks ago, not ago two weeks.
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Six mistakes appear again and again with the past simple.
- Using the past form after did. Did you went? is wrong. After did the verb returns to its base form: Did you go? The same applies to didn't: I didn't went → I didn't go.
- Forgetting the -s disappears, not the verb. In the present, she works; in the past, she worked — never she works yesterday.
- Spelling errors with -ed. stoped, planed, studyed are wrong: stopped, planned, studied.
- Using the past simple for a present result. I lost my key is finished, but if you still cannot find it now, another tense is needed. Finish this lesson first, then compare.
- Putting ago in the wrong position. Say I saw him two days ago, not I saw him ago two days.
- Confusing was and were. They was happy should be They were happy.
Özet
The past simple has a small number of rules, but they control every narrative text.
- Use: finished events, series of past actions, past habits, past states.
- Signals: yesterday, last night / week / month,... ago, in + year, when I was a child.
- Form: regular verbs take -ed with the spelling rules; irregular verbs take their second form.
- Negative and question: didn't + base form; Did + subject + base form.
- Short answers: Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
- Connectors: first, then, after that, later, finally.
Kendini Dene
Answer in full sentences and then check the key.
- Complete: She ____ (study) for the test until midnight.
- Which sentence is correct? (a) Did you went to the concert? (b) Did you go to the concert? (c) Did you gone to the concert?
- Put into the negative: They bought a ticket.
- Rewrite correctly: I saw him ago three days.
- Give the second form of: teach, buy, write, take.
- Write a six-line paragraph about your last holiday. Use four irregular verbs and two time words.
Answer key: 1) studied — a verb ending in consonant + y changes y to i and adds -ed. 2) (b) — after did the verb stays in the base form. 3) They didn't buy a ticket. 4) I saw him three days ago. 5) taught, bought, wrote, took. 6) Any correct paragraph, e.g. Last summer we went to the seaside. My brother taught me to swim and my mother bought ice cream every afternoon. We took hundreds of photos. I wrote a short diary each night. It was the best holiday I remember.
