The adjective futuristic describes something that belongs to the future in the imagination of a film; the noun future names the time period itself.
Futuristic films are usually science fiction, but they may also contain comedy, drama, thriller or horror elements at the same time.
A genre is a category of films; one film may belong to two or more genres and the answer must always be supported by a reason.
The phrase be set in shows where and when the story takes place, not where the film was produced.
Exciting describes a film or a story, while excited describes the person who watches it.
Artificial intelligence, robots, virtual reality, space travel, genetic engineering and cloning are the most common futuristic ideas.
When a film is the object of the sentence, the passive is used: the film was directed and the story was written.
In a text about new technology it is useful to ask three questions: what problem it solves, who gains from it and what new risk it brings.

Confusing futuristic with future: A futuristic machine belongs to the future in the story; do not write a future machine, because the noun cannot describe an object.
Treating animation as the only way to make a film: Animation describes how the characters are created, so an animated science fiction film is still a science fiction film.
Using the active voice when a film is the object: Say the film was directed by a woman; a film cannot direct anyone, so the passive is necessary in this sentence.
Mixing present and past in one story: When you describe a film you watched last year, keep every verb in the past simple from the first sentence to the last one.
Using an -ed adjective for a thing: The film is exciting and the viewer is excited; remember that the -ing form describes what causes the feeling.
Giving a genre without a reason: A complete answer names the genre and supports it, for example science fiction because the story is set in the future.
Confusing science fiction with documentary: A documentary shows real events and facts, while a science fiction film invents a world; this difference is real and not invented.

Read the first two lines of a film description carefully, because the time and the place of the story are usually given there.
Look for one strong keyword in a description; the words robot, future and space are often enough to identify the genre.
Always answer a genre question with a reason and not with the name of the genre alone.
Say a film is exciting and say you are excited; this difference between the -ing and -ed forms appears in almost every test.
When you compare two genres, use while: a documentary is based on real events, while science fiction imagines the future.
In a class discussion about technology, always separate what the film shows from what really exists today.
