Önemli noktalar
- Countable nouns have a plural form, while uncountable nouns such as water, money, advice and information have no plural.
- Many is used with countable plurals and much is used with uncountable nouns.
- A few means some and gives a positive idea, but few means almost none and sounds negative.
- After like, love, enjoy, prefer, mind and finish we use the -ing form of the verb, not the bare infinitive.
- The word news is singular in English even though it ends in the letter s, so the singular verb is required after it.
- Activities of the fixed go group never take the verb do, and tasks of the do group never take the verb go.
- An invitation is answered politely with the phrase I would love to, or refused with No, thanks and a reason.
- Hobby nouns are mostly countable, so an article and a plural form are both possible: a hobby and many different hobbies.
Formüller ve kurallar
- Countable nouns take a, an, many, a few, few, these and those: a guitar, two guitars, many hobbies.
- Uncountable nouns take much, a little, little, some and this: some water, a little time, much advice.
- Unit expressions make an uncountable noun countable: a piece of advice, a piece of furniture, a glass of water.
- go + activity for fixed combinations: go swimming, go shopping, go fishing, go hiking, go camping.
- like, love, enjoy, prefer and don't mind + verb-ing: I enjoy drawing; she doesn't mind waiting.
- would like + infinitive: I'd like to play basketball this weekend.
- Invitation: Would you like to join us? — Yes, I'd love to. / No, thanks. I'm afraid I'm busy.
- How do you spend your free time? — I spend most of my free time reading.
Sık yapılan hatalar
- Using many with an uncountable noun: the combination with water is not English, because water cannot be counted; the correct quantifier for it is much or a little.
- Adding a plural ending to an uncountable noun: the plural forms of advice, information and furniture do not exist in English, so a unit expression is used when the noun must be counted.
- Adding do to an activity that takes go: the combination with do and shopping or with do and fishing is incorrect, because these two are fixed items with the other verb.
- Using the base form after a verb of preference: when the sentence is about an activity, the -ing form is required, so the correct sentence contains that form after the verb.
- Confusing a few with few: the version with the article a means some hobbies and is positive, while the version without it means almost no hobbies and sounds negative.
- Answering an invitation with a bare negative word: in polite English the reply is a full phrase with a reason, because a single negative word sounds cold and gives no information.
Hızlı tekrar ipuçları
- Decide whether the noun is countable before you choose between many and much in the exam.
- After a verb such as enjoy always add the -ing form; the base form after to is only used with another verb in front of it.
- When a text describes weekend plans, underline the frequency words first and then decide if the plan is a routine.
- For invitation questions remember that the short answer is not a plain yes; it is a polite phrase and often needs a reason.
- Use every, once, twice and three times with countable activities such as playing a match or going to the gym.
- Learn the go and do groups as complete items, because the two verbs cannot be changed for each other.
