A national day is a date that is important in the history of a country, such as an independence day, the foundation of the state or the adoption of a national symbol. On these days people celebrate with official ceremonies, parades and cultural events. The flag and the anthem are the most common symbols; schools usually organise special programmes and students take part in plays, recitations or concerts.
