Describing Festivals
Festival anlatımlarında present simple ve edilgen yapı (passive) birlikte kullanılır: The festival is held in July and fireworks are set off at midnight. Etkinlik, yapılış yönünden anlatıldığı için edilgen yapı doğaldır.
Zaman ve yer bilgileri (in October, in the old town) cümleye bağlam katar. Etkinliğin amacı ise to celebrate... ve in order to remember... kalıplarıyla açıklanır.
Festival Tanıtımında Zaman, Yer ve Amaç
Festival metinlerinde zaman edatları kesindir: in ay ve yıl için, on gün için, at saat için kullanılır: in October, on 5 November, at midnight. Bu üç edat aynı cümlede yan yana gelebilir: The parade starts at 8 p.m. on 15 August.
Festivalin gerçekleştiği yer ve düzenleyici edilgen yapıyla verilir: The festival is held in the old town every August. Etkinlik yapılış yönünden anlatıldığı için edilgen yapı doğaldır; düzenleyici belirtilmek istenirse by the local council gibi bir ifade eklenir.
Amaç ise to + V1 ve in order to + V1 ile açıklanır: It is organised to celebrate local music and to keep old traditions alive. Amaç cümlesinin sonunda fiil yalın kalır ve cümle present simplede kalır.
Ne Öğreneceğiz
In this lesson you will learn how to describe a festival in English. You will study the vocabulary of celebration — lanterns, fireworks, parade, crowd, performance, harvest, traditional costume — and the verbs that go with them: decorate, set off, gather, celebrate, take place, last, attract.
You will learn the five questions that describe any festival: what it is called, when and where it takes place, what people do, why it is celebrated, and how long it lasts. Answering all five gives you a complete text.
You will also practise the two structures used in festival descriptions: the present passive (The festival is held in July, Fireworks are set off at midnight) and the infinitive of purpose (It is organised to celebrate the harvest).
Ön Bilgi
You need three things before the lesson.
First, the present simple, because festivals are described as repeating events: Diwali takes place in autumn, not is taking place.
Second, the present passive. Festival texts rarely name an agent, so the passive does the work: The streets are decorated with lights. You need to be able to form it with is for singular subjects and are for plural ones.
Third, the prepositions of time that go with dates: in with months and years, on with days, at with clock times, and during with a period. A festival description almost always contains all three.
Basit Örnek ve Günlük Yaşam
Read this short festival description.
Hidirellez is celebrated in the first week of May in many parts of Turkey. It marks the arrival of spring. People gather in open spaces, light fires and share food with their neighbours. Some write their wishes on a piece of paper and leave them under a tree. It is a time to enjoy nature and to welcome the new season.
Notice the order: name and date, meaning, what people do, and purpose. The last sentence uses the infinitive of purpose (to enjoy, to welcome), which is the standard way to say why a festival exists.
Now write the same four sentences about a festival in your own town.
İleri Örnek
Compare a short listing with a full description.
Listing: Diwali — India — October or November — five days — lights and sweets.
Description: Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most important celebrations in India. It usually takes place in October or November and lasts five days. During the festival, homes are cleaned and decorated with small oil lamps called diyas, and fireworks are set off in the streets. Families gather to share sweets and to exchange gifts. The festival celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
The description adds the passive, a relative clause (called diyas) and a purpose clause. Those three moves turn a list into a text, and they are exactly what an examiner looks for in a writing task.
Adım Adım Çözülmüş Örnek
Follow these steps to describe a festival.
- Step 1 — Name the festival and give the date. Rio Carnival takes place in February, before Lent. Use in for the month and on for a full date.
- Step 2 — Say where it happens. It is held in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. The passive keeps the text neutral.
- Step 3 — Say how long it lasts. The celebrations last about a week.
- Step 4 — Describe two or three activities in the passive. Samba schools parade through the city, costumes are prepared for months, and music is played in every square.
- Step 5 — Explain the purpose with to or in order to. It is organised to bring the community together and to keep local music alive.
- Step 6 — Add one judgement. Although it attracts enormous crowds, the festival keeps its traditional character.

Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Six mistakes appear regularly in festival texts.
- Using the active voice with no subject. Celebrate Diwali in India is not a sentence. Write Diwali is celebrated in India.
- Using in with a day. in 15 August should be on 15 August.
- Writing at midnight as in midnight. Clock times and midnight take at.
- Making fireworks singular. Say fireworks are, not fireworks is.
- Using the present continuous for a repeated event. Diwali is taking place every year is wrong; write Diwali takes place every year.
- Confusing take place and take part. A festival takes place (happens); a person takes part in it (participates).
