Birine ne yapması gerektiğini söylerken should ve ought to kullanılır. İkisi anlamca yakındır; ought to biraz daha resmi ve vurguludur. Should ve ought to, tavsiye vermek ve uygun olanı önermek için kullanılır: You should see a doctor. / You ought to rest more. İkisi de modal fiil olduğundan hemen ardından yalın fiil (V1) gelir.
